Winning Basketball with the Flex Offense
Since the 1970's the flex offense is an offensive tactic that features passing, screening, and ball-reversal. The flex offense is effective in basketball because all players are interchangeable. The traditional roles of guards, forwards and centers do not affect how this offensive scheme runs. By having all players on the court similar, no one player has more opportunity to the ball and it makes it harder for the defense to stop the offense. This type of offense is most effective with man to man defenses. In the flex offense, the point guard brings the ball up the court to start the offensive play, the other players move in a pattern to set screens for each other to create openings.
Youth Players and the Flex Offense
Some coaches think that the flex offense is too difficult to run with youth players. But, once the kids understand the pattern of picks and passes it is an easy offense for them to execute. In order to teach this offense effectively to your players, you must first teach them the necessary drills so they have the skills to execute the flex offense.Drills to Teach:
- Passing
- Setting a Proper Screen
- Pick 'n Roll
- Foot Movement

LOOK WHAT RESPECTED COACHES SAY ABOUT THE BOOK
"I have run the Flex for over half of my 29 year career, and this book has everything and even more than I could've imagined. I love the quick hitters." Tom Klusman
Head Coach, RollinsCollege
"Based on the content and diagrams the " Flex Offense" is easy to teach and install. I found the diagrams to be clear and precise. The simple language used by the author makes for a smooth teaching transfer from the book to the audience."
George H. Raveling
Director of Nike Global Basketball Sports Marketing
Former Head Coach at Washington State, Iowa and SouthernCal
"Wow! What a book. Diagrams are clearly explained and concise. The book can be used at any level%u2026.high school, college, or pro. Great stuff!"
Kenny Atkinson
Assistant Coach, New York Knicks
"In 34 years of coaching high school basketball I have never seen a more complete book that allows you to understand and implement the flex offense into any style of play. Being a skeptic of the flex offense for many years, I was amazed at how easy it is to adapt to any offense, any style and any situation. The secondary break, the inbounds and the side-bounds were a plus to the integration of the flex scheme. I would put this as a must read for any coach regardless of years of experience or style of play."
Fran Campbell
Head Coach, Wren (S.C.) High School
