Developing Sound Practice Plans

Positive motivational ideas should be used within the context of a mechanically sound practice plan. Here are some ideas to consider in regard to proper practice procedures.

* Have a plan--season, weekly, daily. Keep a daily practice plan and a weekly practice composite. Otherwise, you may spend too much time on one phase of the game while neglecting another.
* Write down specific goals for each practice segment and emphasize each of them. Consider a practice theme for the day.
* Give your helpers specific duties that afford them a level of prestige. Write down a job description for each. Then take the time to sit down and discuss the assignments with each of them individually.
* Thoughtful repetition is the key to skill development. Seek out drills that provide repetitive opportunities.
* Each practice should be designed to provide sequential, meaningful learning. One way to do this is to start practice by discussing what was learned yesterday.
* Use many short practice segments. This is in opposition to covering one phase of the game and using one long practice segment.
* Create a winning practice atmosphere.
* Plan situation practice segments that utilize the clock, involve a specific rule, or require a definition of specific terminology.
* Blow a sharp whistle in practice. It should signify that we are ready to proceed to the next phase of our plan without delay.
* Coaches dress out for every practice. They are the first to arrive and the last to leave. Use pre and post practice time to meet/work with individuals.

For those of you who are classroom teachers, these steps might look significantly similar to a perfect lesson plan. Coaches are teachers and thus they should view and practice the steps needed to communicate a successful lesson.
