Dos and Don'ts of Bass Fishing

Follow these tips on your next trip to the lake!

Do use dark colored baits when bass fishing in clear water. The volume of sunlight that penetrates clear waters makes it hard for fish to see light colored lures. They will be able to make a cleaner strike on a dark colored bait.

Do look for schools of fish that bass are known to feed upon. If you find a school of bait fish, you can rest assured that bass won't be far away.

Don't stick with a method that clearly isn't working. On days when bass seem to be selective, try casting into deep structures with spoons or spinners. This can bring results on even the slowest of days.

Do spend time preparing your equipment before fishing. Spools that are only half full with line or lures with damaged or missing hooks will yield inferior results. Slow down and take a few minutes to make sure that you are putting yourself in a position for the most success. The fish aren't going anywhere.

Do use topwater baits at dust or dawn when light is at a premium. Remember, the darker it is, the more likely bass are to be near the surface. During peak hours of sunlight, spinner baits can be great for exposing hooks across a wide range of depths.
