Bass Saxophone

Ranked #13,366 in Music, #368,536 overall

The bass saxophone is only the second largest of the saxophone family. (The contrabass is the biggest.) In general larger instruments have a lower tone, so the bass saxophone (usually tuned to B♭) is the second deepest type of saxophone.

Comparing Bass Saxophones

Bert Brandsma introduces two bass saxophones, a 1921 Martin and a Conn 14M Ladyface. He compares the two instruments and then plays them making this video a good introduction to the world of the bass sax.

Bass Saxophone Concerto

The bass saxophone's heyday was in the era of the 78 rpm record. It was relatively easy to record so was used as the bass part on a number of jazz recordings. These days, those parts would normally be played on the tuba or double bass. The Jan van Dijk bass saxophone concerto is a complete contrast. It's classical piece and modern written in 1999 for Andreas van Zoelen who is featured in this video, playing the second movement.
