The Bass-Snaps approach

Bass lessons and tips broken down into tiny morsels for the true beginner.
This is true "pre-flash". It's all about the ground floor basics here.
Called Bass-Snaps because you will find one concept at a time, clearly explained. Then, simply integrate each lesson into your toolshed of information. These add up quickly and easily. The next thing you know, you can play with the full understanding of everything that you're doing. No mysteries!

Holding the Electric Bass

Balance and Comfort - Set-Up number 1

NOTE: I'll be writing these tips and lessons with the assumption that you are a right handed player. If you're left-handed, simply reverse the instructions as needed.

The first thing, before you play one note, is to simply put the bass on your lap. It should be on your right thigh. Adjust the bass until you feel that it is balanced well. Do the best that you can to have the bass on your lap without holding on to it in any way. If you can let go of both hands and the bass sits well and comfortable without your needing to adjust, you have achieved the objective.
Try this without a strap. If you can do it without a strap, adding a strap will be much more comfortable and will then "lock-in" a comfortable posture that will serve you very well.
It is important to do this consistently until it becomes a good habit and an automatic posture.
