My basset hound, Zeke

Ranked #33,225 in Pets & Animals, #1,285,848 overall

Basset hounds are intelligent, loving animals who make wonderful family pets. They are actually large dogs whose short, stubby legs lead some people to think of them as small dogs. Their bark is much worse than their bite and they can be quite vociferous at times, letting you know when someone is at the door or baying at an intrusive squirrel. Their large, liquid brown eyes make them excellent at cadging food, leftover or otherwise. Their ears are long and floppy, sometimes reaching eleven or twelve inches in length.

All about Zeke

Zeke is a tricolor basset (in his case this means his fur is tan, black and white.) He was born on May 31st, 2000 and we brought him to our home when he was about 7 weeks old. His mother had given birth to a litter of puppies only a short time before and had accidentally gotten out and become pregnant again much too soon. She subsequently chose to ignore Zeke's littler and the breeder, Mrs. Frazer, had to hand feed Zeke and his siblings around the clock every four hours for about a month. As a consequence of being raised by a human and not his basset hound mother, Zeke identifies strongly with humans. He is part of our people pack!

I love my pet because...

he is very companionable. He "talks" a great deal to his human owners to alert them to his current expectations or needs. He plays very gently with our cat, Zak, and they can frequently be found sharing his dog bed together. He likes to go on exploratory walks around our rural property, sniffing for rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks. We have dubbed him "Houdini dog" because of his ability to get out of almost any collar or harness so he can follow his nose over to our neighbors.

Basset hounds are very photogenic animals and Zeke is no exception.

Are bassets easy to train?

Yes, because they are intelligent dogs.

No, because they are intelligent dogs that can be extremely stubborn.

Awesome toys

We have a small collection of basset hound Christmas tree ornaments, including a basset hound angel for the top of our tree. I have owned a basset hound mouse pad and we have several basset hound mugs. Although we don't have any decorative basset pictures hung around our house, we do have a stuffed basset hound toy.
