3) Don't be afraid to make plans in advance, then change them as conditions warrant once you get to your fishing destination. You may find the place deserted, for instance, and for good reason. Maybe fish aren't as plentiful as they were in that area. Maybe conditions for the fish to be hungry aren't there (maybe they have a lot of minnows and crayfish and simply aren't biting) or maybe the water's not right (wrong climate, pollution, etc.) So have maps along and plenty of supplies: food, beverages, fresh bait, etc. And head to another area to fish if you need to so that your entire trip isn't wasted.

The Different Types of Bass

Most of us will, for the most part concentrate our fishing efforts on largemouth bass disregarding the other different types of bass at our fishing disposal.

This is all well and good when the largemouth is biting, but what happens when you find yourself off to a likely fishing spot in search of largemouth bass only to find that we are confronted by a large population of smallmouth or even striped bass?

As a big bass fisherman do you pass up on this opportunity of having a tussle with the small relative of the largemouth and move on to a more likely largemouth bassin' site; or do you instead spend a pleasurable day fishing and finding out that largemouth bass aren't the only good bass in town.

Well, to any fisherman worth his salt, the answer is resounding and obvious: you spend your time enjoying the fishing efforts afforded to you by the local game which in this particular case isn't largemouth bass.

That said, bass of any type are still some of the best game fish around and you could do a lot worse than finding yourself in a lake teeming with smallmouth bass.

So since largemouth aren't the only type of bass that you will encounter as a bass fisherman, I have provided below a short list of some of the different types of bass that you will come across in your fishing lifetime.

You will also perhaps notice that the list includes the largemouth bass, because although I have been exhaustively talking about it, I have not in anyway especially pointed out its many features to you. To that end, I have started out my list with the largemouth and proceeded from there onwards.

The field "A.K.A." (which is short for, Also Known As), I have included here for the good reason that most bass are known by a variety of different names throughout the bass fishing population, and one person's black bass might not necessarily be yours or my definition of a black bass.

Speaking of which, I feel that I should mention here, that quite a few people refer to all types of bass as black bass. The most commonly referred of these is the largemouth bass which is also called black bass by some people as well as surprisingly enough, green trout!

The size of a bass will vary depending on season, and age of the bass as well as the relative feeding conditions of the bass. However, the information provided in the "Size" fields for each type of bass is an approximation of the normal growth rates of the bass.

The weights and lengths given below therefore, are subject very much to change depending upon a number of environmental factors, but you can however, take these as guidelines.

I would also just like to point out that bass of any type are such popular game fish simply because they make for good sport. In general they tend to have aggressive or fighting qualities, and once you get one on the other end of your line, you can be assured that you will be in for a good tussle.

Largemouth Bass

A.K.A.: Florida bass, black bass, bigmouth, Southern largemouth, Florida largemouth, bucketmouth

Size: It has been noted that the female largemouth bass tends to grow more than the male of the species. Therefore you will find that a female can grow up to about 22 inches in length whereas a male largemouth will grow to somewhere in the region of 15-16 inches.

Naturally they can grow larger if the conditions are right, and in most cases this entails if the feeding conditions are optimal. In these cases you will find yourself with trophy sized bass on the end of your line.

A good weight for trophy bass is somewhere in the region of 10 pounds and higher.

Habitat: Most largemouth bass can be found in just about any body of water that you might think to look at. This includes lakes, reservoirs, streams, estuaries and even ponds!

This is also another reason why largemouth bass fishing is gaining in such popularity. The larger percentage of habitats for the largemouth bass means that most fishermen can have a go at hooking the big one.

You will also want to note however, that largemouth bass tend to favor waters that are non-flowing and clear, although they have been known to put up with murkier waters as well.

You will also find that largemouth prefer shallow waters in which to feed, as well as cover such as weeds from which to feed and stay out of the harsh light.

Season: Largemouth tend to be more active when the waters heat up, this means that bass fishing is best in the late spring to summer months, although you will be able to fish largemouth bass even in the winter season.

Although you can find largemouth during the colder seasons they will not necessarily be as plentiful as during the warmer spring and summer months when the water temperatures are soaring and the baitfish are also in to be found in abundance.

Diet of a bass: The largemouth is not called the "bucketmouth" for nothing. It is known for its voracious eating habits and what this means for you as a bass fisherman is that you can be assured of at least a little nibble no matter what type of lure or bait you use.

Everyone will have their version of what the best bait is to get a largemouth, but I believe that a lot depends on your own personal techniques and your personal preferences, so it's a matter of trial and error to see which of the baits and lures that you like.

Personally speaking I have to say that I prefer live bait to the plastic ones, although those do come in handy as well. As I said it's a matter of preference.

Generally though, you will need to use a lure depending on the size of the largemouth that you want to catch as well, since the eating habits of the largemouth tends to change as they grow. Basically the smaller they are the smaller their meals, vice versa.

Spawning: Largemouth spawning season tends to be during the months of December to May, with the spawning frenzy picking up as the waters heat up.

Good to eat?: This largely depends on whether you like fish! Barring that however, largemouth have been known to fill a belly or two, and if prepared in the right way, it can taste wonderful. It is especially flavorful if the fish is one you have caught!

Besides that however, the meat of the largemouth bass has a low oil percentage and is white and flaky.

The One that Got Away

There will always be tall tales and stories of the "one that got away". It is in acknowledgement of this fact, that this section has been named.

Now to get down to the nitty-gritty of it all. Actually, there's nothing much to tell really. I believe I have said all I needed to say in the preceding sections, the rest is now up to you and your new found fishing abilities.

Just remember that tall tales, and cold mornings spent out in the depths of nowhere are all part of fishing's greatest moments - the ones that aren't televised for your entertainment!

Actually, wait a second. There was something that I think needs to be added, only I'm not too sure whether I mentioned it or not.

Did I ever tell you about the king of all largemouth which I nearly caught a few years ago? Why it was so big it all but pulled my arms off, and what a merry dance it led me too! It had to be at least 30 pounds if not more, and I know for a fact that it was as long as my forearm!

I nearly caught him too, only out of nowhere a sudden gust of wind comes up and rocks my boat so violently that I have to clutch on to the sides to avoid capsizing.

And the really weird thing about the whole situation was that almost as soon as I let the bass go (very regretfully mind you!), to keep from capsizing, the wind dies down and I'm left sitting there wondering what just happened.

So what happened to the fish afterwards? I can hear you asking eagerly. Did I ever catch it, or did some other lucky fisherman manage to land it?

Well, that part of the story I'm afraid is up to you to finish. But last I heard that king of bass was still alive and kicking, and leading us simple fisher folk a merry chase!

Fishing rule #3: Fishing will do a lot for a person but it won't make him truthful.
