Bass Habitat Fishing Tip, Rivers
Catch More Bass in the Rivers with these great bass fishing tips.
Rivers provide excellent habitat for bass. Rivers are highly oxygenated and the oxygen level in a river is usually evenly mixed from top to bottom. Another great feature about rivers is they often receive less fishing pressure than lakes. Rivers tend to be generally slightly warmer in winter and slightly cooler in the summer than lakes.Look for bass close to, but out of, the direct flow of the current. Objects within a river such as stumps or logs serve to break the current up; and bass will hold downstream on the edge of these current breaks. The secret to catching more bass here is knowing how to properly work these structures. You see we've all heard of this before, look for current breaks and the bass will hold downstream on the edge.
The problem is not every rock breaking the rivers current is going to hold bass. You need to identify which ones do and which ones do not. There's no point wasting your time fishing a current break if there's no fish. This especially holds true in a bass fishing tournament. I like to look for what I call double "V"'s. If you look at a current flowing around a rock it forms a "V"shape, well find a section on the river where there is a Double "V". Where 2 structures one behind the other usually several feet apart create 2 "V"'s. but where the edge of the current break is shared by these 2 objects.
You generally find that the bass are holding on farthest downstream V. If you think of the edges of these V's as conveyor belts, bass are not stupid. It's a lot easier for them to sit in eddies of the farthest downstream V rather then the first, this then becomes a bass habitat magnet.

Kevin VanDam covers it all from tackle to technique, bad weather to muddy water. I've read other bass fishing books but found many to be either confusing or too "scientific" or down right dull. But this this book is amazing. Covering all aspects of bass fishing including the mental preparation needed in bass fishing tournaments.

Fill Your Bass Fishing Baiting Reels with Ease
Berkley Portable Line Spooling Station
Amazon Price: $27.51 (as of 02/13/2012)![]()

I bought this item last year, and it sure makes spooling line onto a reel a much easier proposition when adding 250 yards of line to open faced spinning reels. It is also useful for Fly fishing reels. I used to have to use pencils for spools, or tie line to some tree....it was always a hassle. This works fine right on the kitchen table.
Bass Habitat Fishing Tip, Streams
Catch Huge Bass with this Pro Bass Fishing Secret.
Streams are largely overlooked for bass fishing, most anglers view streams as trout waters but streams can also provide excellent bass habitat especially for cooler-water varieties like smallmouth's.Look for bass within deep holes, below rapids and holding along the face of steep banks. We all know that undercuts are excellent holding areas for both trout and bass alike but not all undercuts are created equal. Remember bass avoid heavy current and some undercuts within a section of a stream were created because of these same currents bass look to avoid. Some of these undercuts hold huge amounts of swirling currents and so should not be your first choice. Look for narrow stream sections that have just come off of a larger faster moving section of the stream, these sections of streams act like a funnel and bass hiding places here can be at a premium.
Bass Habitat Fishing Tip, Reservoirs
Another Solid Bass Habitat, Check out this Bass Fishing Secret.
Another great top secret pro bass fishing secret is a solid knowledge of reservoirs.Reservoirs generally have water levels that fluctuate throughout the seasons. Where these fluctuations occur, it is difficult for shoreline weeds and vegetation to take hold. As a result when this occurs, bass tend to use shallow brush, logs, etc. for cover.
So the next time your fishing a reservoir after the lake has been flooded out for several years, or even after a drought. Before chucking that spinnerbait take a few minutes to look around. Does it look like weeded sections are thinned out? Is the vegetation getting sparse? When you start noticing these conditions you may find that shallow fishing becomes tougher and the bass have moved offshore looking for other cover.
In addition, many reservoirs offer a forage base consisting primarily of schooling baitfish. These baitfish tend to follow drifting blooms of algae and plankton, that float along the surface that move with the currents and wind. These can serve reference markers and ambush points that bass simply love.

Most bass fishing videos just show you someone fishing and talking, but not really showing you how to catch more bass. Ike really explains how bass fishing works and demonstrates it very well.

Bass Habitat Fishing Tip, Ponds
Ahh the Bassmasters Honeyhole
Small lakes and man-made ponds offer great bass fishing and can hold some of the biggest fattest bass. Many however are on private land. Obtain permission from a landowner before fishing. The shoreline on a pond is the most important area within this bass habitat, especially if the water level remains fairly constant throughout the year and shoreline vegetation has taken hold. You'll know that this is the case when the shoreline of the pond is thick in vegetation sometimes several feet thick. Fallen trees, deep holes and rocky areas around man-made dams offer good bass fishing. Ponds may become heavy with vegetation, making bass fishing tough but bass habitat better.
This is where a solid grasp of what bass tackle is going to bring you in the big one helps. Sure a lot of us immediately chuck on a weedless plug, or spoon or even a weedless texas worm rig, but there's also a lot of subtlety to these techniques and a great grasp of bass fishing techniques is going to go along way to making you the next local bassmaster.
