Rivers provide excellent habitat for bass. Rivers are highly oxygenated and the oxygen level in a river is usually evenly mixed from top to bottom. Another great feature about rivers is they often receive less fishing pressure than lakes. Rivers tend to be generally slightly warmer in winter and slightly cooler in the summer than lakes.

Look for bass close to, but out of, the direct flow of the current. Objects within a river such as stumps or logs serve to break the current up; and bass will hold downstream on the edge of these current breaks. You generally find that the bass are holding on farthest downstream V. If you think of the edges of these V's as conveyor belts, bass are not stupid. It's a lot easier for them to sit in eddies of the farthest downstream V rather then the first, this then becomes a bass habitat magnet.

Small lakes and man-made ponds offer great bass fishing and can hold some of the biggest fattest bass. Many however are on private land. Obtain permission from a landowner before fishing. The shoreline on a pond is the most important area within this bass habitat, especially if the water level remains fairly constant throughout the year and shoreline vegetation has taken hold.
