Build Your Own Bat House

Bats have gotten a bad rap thanks to the old time monster movies.

Fact is, bats are an important part of our ecosystem. but the primary benefit to you is that they eat incredible amounts of mosquitoes and other undesireable insects.

To encourage bats on your property they need a place to stay. You can easily build your own bat box to house from a dozen to more than 100 bats, depending on your needs, available space and carpentry skills.

In this lens you will find plans for 22 different types of bat boxes and a video on "How To". And don't miss the video on the building of "The World's Largest Bat House".

Where To Put Your Bat House

Before you choose your bat box plan, consider the space available based on the bats' needs.

Houses where high temperatures in July average 80° F or less, should receive at least 10 hours of sun, and more is better.

At least six hours of direct daily sun is recommended for all bat houses where July's daily highs average less than 100° F.

Full, all-day sun is often successful in all but the hottest climates. To create favorable conditions for maternity colonies in summer, internal bat-house temperatures should stay between 80° F and 100° F as long as possible.

It's Easy to Build a Bat Box

Bat houses come in many sizes and all are simple to build. They can be made in many sizes so consider your available space before you choose your plan. Your house can hold from just a few pats to upwards of 100.

This link provides 22 different plans.

You can also find bat house kits and houses that are fully assembled.
