Bath Crayons for Bathtime Art

I spent weeks looking for bath toys for my 18 month old. She had just started to really enjoy trying to draw so I figured bath time would be the best time to jump start her creativity. Easy clean-up! I started at Wal-mart and couldn't think of what isle it could possibly be on. I tried the baby/toddler section and found a couple bath toys, but only little figures that float, nothing real fun or excited. I finally asked an employee where I might find bath crayons, and of course, they didn't know where I might find them. So, I gave up and went to Target a few days later. Success! They were in the baby section, not the toys. Only one option of bath crayons, so I got them for $6.99.

The first try at the crayons in the bath was full of success and failures. She LOVED the crayons, and they had come with a little ducky sponge and she even cleaned up after herself! The failure was that the crayons tips broke off, and the little case they were in, didn't keep the actual crayon in. My daughter ripped out the crayons within a few minutes. She broke 2 in half within the first bath. My daughter is now 2 1/2 and bathtime art is still one of her favorite things. We have tried many different crayons now that I know where to find them. I'll point you in the direction of great bathtime crayons so you don't have to go through the searching that I had to!

Best Bath Crayons

My personal favorite bathtub crayons

I've gone through plenty of bath crayon options now. Here I'll show you were to get my top 5 favorite bath crayons. These have the easiest clean-up, best sturdiness, lasted the longest, and my daughter absolutely loved. I enjoy trying new products though, and will keep this list updated as we try out new options.

Make Your Own Soap Crayons

You can actually make your own bath crayons if you want to get a little creative. They are fun to make with your child as well! My daughter will help for about 10 minutes before she decides to run off to do something else.

Here is a list of things you will need to make your soap crayons:

1) soap and cheese grater
or prepackaged soap shavings
2) food coloring
or washable tempera paint
3) warm water
4) ice cube tray or other molds
5) mixing bowl

1. Shave a piece of soap into small shavings with a cheese grater into a bowl or container that you can easily mix in, I prefer my favorite scented cucumber melon soap. You can also get scents from hobby stores and add them into prepackaged soap shavings (not detergent).

2. Mix in a small amount of warm water, enough to make a pasty texture. I mix it up with my hands because it is hard to mix with a utensil.

3. Add liquid food coloring (not the paste!) for pastel colors, or washable tempera paint for brighter colors. Add as much as needed to get the color desired.

4. Scoop out the paste and smush it into an ice cube tray or mold. (or you can just make golf size or tennis ball size balls in your hands) Put the tray or mold in the freezer for quick and more durable hardening. Let them thaw out for a while and they are ready to go!

Finished Soap Crayons!

The soap that I used was a yellow bar of soap, so it ended up causing the animals to be a little discolored, but the coloring your child does in the tub will ends up being the color of the tempera paint that is used.

Always test your soap crayon on a small area of your tub and let it sit there for about 5 minutes then make sure it rubs off easily. Some food colorings and paints are still hard to remove if you use a large quantity in the mixing process. Because they are made of soap, they will wear down quickly while in water unlike real bath crayons.

Give them to your children in the tub and let them enjoy!

Keep all of your childs bath items organized!

My daughter has tons of toys as well as her crayons and stickers so we needed something to keep them organized in the bathroom. I tried a corner mesh holder and it never stayed stuck to the bathtub walls. A friend pointed me to this organizer and it has been the best. My daughter puts all her toys away once she is ready to get out!

Educational Value. Choose toys that are not only fun to play with but also stimulate your kid's mind. Give him a bath puppet to encourage imaginative pretend plays and positive interaction or give him a multi-colored wash glove to improve his visual perception and color discrimination. Always remember that every single minute of your child's day holds a possibility for learning and mind enriching activities, this includes bath time.

My boys had soap crayons and like you mention they were cheap and flimsy - it was worth the moment of fun to watch their faces light up that they were 'allowed' to draw on a wall ;) Marvelous lens- so full of personal touches.
