Green living

What's Green Living All About?

When you hear the term "green living", you may get an image in your head of hippies living in communes making everything they use.  Truth is:  the definition of green living has changed.  The concept simply includes doing things to help the environment be viable for future generations.  If you don't feel like shedding your worldly possessions and living in a mud hut, here are a few steps you can take you make your life a little greener.

Buy local organic products.  Organic farmers not only use little to no chemicals, they also take steps to reduce water and soil degradation, along with other problems caused by traditional agriculture.  Veggies from groceries stores have usually been shipped a long way, which causes environmental pollution.  Buy your produce from a local farmer's market or coop.  If you can't find one, start your own organic garden.

Use natural products.  Household products that don't contain chemicals are not only better for the environment; they're safer for your family as well.  You can make various cleaning products from stuff in your kitchen, like vinegar.  If you don't have the time, there are products you can buy, such as www.bathandbodyorganics.com . Just make sure they're all natural and don't just have a few natural ingredients.

Reduce.  We've all heard the spiel about reduce, reuse, recycle; however, most of us focus on recycling and completely ignore the reducing.  Try to use products that don't end up in landfills like cloth diapers instead of disposables or regular towels instead of paper ones.   Another great idea is to buy concentrated products because they come in smaller packages.

Reuse.  Many people have gotten in the habit of sending their recyclables away in the bins, but there's more supply than demand in the recycling market.  That's why it's also important to reuse items if you can.  Before you throw something in the recycling bin, consider whether you could reuse it for something else.

Recycle.  We should all have a recycle bin in our homes, but you can do stuff to recycle on your own.  Instead of using potting soil in your garden, set up a compost pile and make your own rich soils.  You can also use products like shredded plastic bags to mulch your garden.  If you get creative, there's lots of recycling you can do on your own.

Conserve Energy.  There are so many things you can do to save energy.  The big plus on this is that it also saves you money.  Get low energy light bulbs for your fixtures.  You could also take more drastic renovation steps by getting new energy efficient windows or installing solar panels.  Even small steps like setting the thermostat a degree higher or lower can make a big difference.  A big way to conserve energy is to get a more fuel efficient car, or get rid of your car altogether.  If you don't need a big SUV, then don't get one.  You'll be doing the environment a big favor.

Teach your children.  You might not be able to change the world on your own, but you can start a trend my teaching others to be more environmentally friendly, starting with your kids.  Make sure your children know what steps you take to improve the environment and why.

How to Grow Your Own Organic Vegetable Garden

Wish you could have fresh, flavorful vegetables right at your fingertips all season long? Do you want to be confident that your vegetables are safe for your family to eat? Well, you can have all that and more. Growing your own organic vegetable garden not only assures fresh, safe, great tasting vegetables all season long; it also provides you with exercise, stress relief, and the knowledge that your hard work is accomplishing great things for your family. If this sounds like something you'd love to try, here are a few tips you need to know before you get started.

The first thing you need to do is to prepare your humus for the soil. Ideally, you should start composting well ahead of time so you can simply recycle your yard waste and not have to buy store fertilizers. Even though you can purchase organic fertilizers, making your own is better. To make a compost pile: just throw your fallen leaves, grass clippings, and other plant matter into a bin or pile and stir periodically. This will eventually decompose into quality humus to fertilize your soil.

In addition to your compost humus, there are other natural ingredients you can add to build nutrients in your garden soil. Manure is a great natural fertilizer, but it's best found locally rather than bought from a store. You may also have to add natural ingredients to the soil if the pH balance is off. If the pH of your soil is below 6, add crushed egg, clam, or oyster shells. If your pH is above 7.5, lower it by mulching with wood chips or sawdust. These treatments, along with other organic additives, can take a while to work. You want to prepare the soil up to 6 weeks before planting to make sure the conditions are optimal.

Before you can plant, you need to pick the right vegetables. You should buy organically grown seedlings. If you can't find any, just sprout your own seeds. This way you can be sure there are no chemicals going into your vegetables at any stage of growth. You also want to be sure that the variety you buy isn't genetically altered in any way. While these plants might grow better looking fruits and vegetables, they produce less flavorful and less healthy fruits and veggies.

Once your garden is planted, you can naturally repel pests and fertilize the soil by companion planting. This means you plant more than one crop in the same area. If you have an insect problem, you can find plants to repel specific pests. If you hav

Ever wonderd if Certified Organic products are really organic?

Certified Organic Body Products

There are body products popping up on shelves everywhere marked as "organic". They claim to be much more beneficial for you than other body products. You're probably thinking "what are organic body products and are they really better for me?" Well, organic body products are actually a complicated issue; there's no simple answer, but here's some help for sorting it out.

It's true that using organic materials for body products is better for your health. Modern day body products include hundreds of toxic chemicals. Since these ingredients aren't ingested into the body, there is very little regulation on what can and cannot be used to make various skin, hair, mouth, and nail care products. Most nail polish contains known carcinogens. Some mouth washes have been linked to increased mouth and throat cancer. Chemicals in deodorant can greatly increase your risk of Alzheimer's. Other chemicals may cause asthma, ADHD, hormonal problems, and even decreased fertility. These are just a few examples of the many dangerous ingredients in the products you use on a daily basis. Even if these claims can't be proven, isn't it better to be careful and not use products with these harmful chemicals?

You may think "that's horrible, I need to go buy organic body products today!" But keep reading before you do. Since most producers can get away with upping prices just by putting "organic" on the label, there's been a lot of deception in the market. Producers will replace one ingredient with an organic counterpart and mark their product as organic even though it contains all the same dangerous additives. Others will be even more deceptive by using the chemical definition of organic. That means the "organic" ingredients they list simply contain carbon.

The first clue in looking for genuine organic body products is to search for products with a certification seal. Don't stop there though. You need to know the standards for certification for each seal. For example, the USDA seal means is that the product is 70% certified organically grown materials. The other 30% can be most any other toxic or unnatural chemical.

To be sure you're getting a 100% organically grown product, you have to turn it around and look at the ingredients list. You should be able to recognize most of the ingredients on the label. If there's anything on the list you can't pronounce, keep looking. Also be aware of ingredients labeled with the word natu

Organic Dieting! Is there such a thing?

Losing weight the natural way.

Losing Weight by Eating Organic Foods

Right now, it seems like everyone is looking for the secret to losing weight. They take pills and go on the latest diet looking for a quick fix. The truth is, there's no miracle diet that will help you take off 20 pounds overnight, but there are things that can give you that extra boost to finally take the weight off once and for all. One great "extra boost" is organic food. These are foods grown without pesticides, hormones, preservatives, and other harmful chemicals. They are designed to work naturally with the environment around them and within the body of the person who eats them. Eating healthy with organics can help you finally take off those excess pounds naturally.

When the nutrients in each organic fruit or vegetable are compared to their traditional counterparts, they've been found to have significantly more beneficial substances. In some cases, there was as many as three times the amount of certain nutrients. In one study, organic oranges were half the size of the traditionally grown oranges and still had more vital nutrients. You may just consider taking a multivitamin; this isn't going to give you everything your body needs to function, but eating appropriate amounts of organic fruits and vegetables can.

If you doubt that organics are healthier for you, think about the fact that the artificial chemicals they contain have only been eaten for a small fraction of the time humans have been around. These chemicals stress your liver and cannot be filtered. This causes them to build up in the fat stores of your body and has been linked to storing even more fat. If you're concerned about getting these chemicals out sooner rather than later, you can go on a juice fast just prior to starting an organic diet, but this should be supervised by a nutritionist or medical professional.

So I've said that the amount of nutrients and lack of harmful chemicals helps your body function more efficiently, but you're probably wondering how this helps you to finally lose all that weight. First of all, by digesting food quickly and efficiently, you're not only increasing your metabolism (which is essential to weight loss), you also able to gain the full energy potential of your food. This means you'll be less fatigued and ready to get up and move. That way you'll have all the energy you need to get moving and burn off even more calories. Studies have also found that rats who consume organics sleep better.

Health Benefits of Using Organic Bath and Body Products for Your Baby

Pink or blue is what most people think of when they
think of sweet, chubby babies. But you are thinking green. As your new baby enters the world, she is fresh, pure and untainted. You only want the best to surround her and the peace of mind that she is protected from harsh and unnecessary chemicals.
In years past, you would have had to make your own organic products for your baby. But following the popularity of organic food, organic baby products have found vast acceptance among attentive and purposeful parents. An array of eco-friendly, organic skin care products including lotion, shampoo, soap and gifts, are now available for the conscientious parent.

Chemical Overload

Babies are exceptionally sensitive to the health risks inherent in pesticides and other chemicals. They eat and drink more than adults in relation to their size so their food must be chemical free. Even organic clothing is wise because of the high chemical content in cotton and synthetic fabrics. But skin care is of the utmost importance.
Since their skin is so new and soft, it absorbs chemicals, preservatives and harsh detergents easier and more quickly than an adult's skin would. Even nationally branded products that are made for babies include large amounts of fragrances, detergents and preservatives, all which can irritate the skin and lungs, can cause skin reactions and are unnecessarily strong for children. And considering how often the baby puts her fingers in her mouth and you can also begin to see the danger of digestion.

Choosing Organic

With organic bath and body products specifically made for babies, you can feel confident that you are keeping your baby clean and healthy without subjecting her to harsh chemicals. All-natural baby skin care products use botanicals to accomplish the same purpose as chemicals, without the disturbing side effects.
Her hair will be just as clean when you use organic shampoo. He eyes and skin will be less irritated when you rinse away the shampoo. She will smell just as sweet when you use natural handmade soap, baby bath with natural ingredients and certified organic body care products. And her skin will be just as smooth when you utilize shea butter and organic body lotion. You can rest easy that her skin will not have a reaction and she will not be in any danger of ingesting residual chemicals as she sucks her fingers and toes.
Natural skin care products also addresses sensitive skin issues. The longer she avoids products that trigger sensitive skin irritations, she stronger and more resilient her skin will be. There is no need to try endless products, trying to determine the trigger for her sensitive issue. Instead choose purely organic and avoid sensitivity issues entirely.
Conclusion
Organic skin care products do more than provide peace of mind. You have given her a healthy start during her formative years. As your toddler grows, you can forgo worrying if she accidentally guzzles the bottle of shampoo or chews on the bar of soap. You have set the stage for a life-long use of natural, safe and chemical free products. You have surrounded her in a cocoon of safety and taught her to value purity.
