A Look Back in Time

How often do you bathe? Once a day? Twice? Do you hop in the shower or bathtub on a whim? I know I do. I take the water and the bath for granted, but in my grandmother's day bathing was a part of the Saturday evening ritual. You bathed and washed your hair before stepping out on the town on Saturday night, and certainly before slipping into the pew on Sunday mornings.

Bathing more than once a week was an extravagance my grandmother refused to indulge in, but she cherished her weekly bath and often told me what it was like when she was a child. From the time the ice broke in the spring until it froze over in the winter, she bathed in the frigid lake water. As with most the working class at the time, a dip in a river, lake, or stream was a part of their weekly routine.

Hey! Where did the bubbles come from?

Can you come up with a better caption?

I really like the caption I gave the picture above, but I'm willing to change it if you can come up with a better one.

Nope! I like yours.

Yours is perfect! LOL!

WhiteOak50 says:

Momma, we need more beans, the bubbles are getting low!

I've got a better one.

BigGirlBlue says:

That's not a bubble.

Jimmie says:

It's times like this that I really wish I were an only child!

The working man was a logical fellow and made the most of what was available to him. Bathing was usually a private affair, but on occasion it was turned into part of the mating ritual. A lake doesn't qualify as a hot tub, but it can be just as much fun.

A Quick Dip

Can you think of a caption for the picture below? They're using soap so it should be clean.

Wait a minute! I thought you said this was a hot spring.

Just a dip and then we can eat some of that fruit in the center of the garden.

Oh, it doesn't hurt, the little fish helps to clean your feet!

Turn back the clock a little farther and you still have the working class sliding into the closest stream, but the wealthy turned bathing into a social event. The communal bathhouse was almost as popular as the local pub.

If I didn't like freezing water, I wouldn't be in it.

All it took was a short walk, outside, and down memory lane, for me to truly appreciate indoor plumbing and the claw-foot tub in the bathroom. I like to bathe with nothing but a glass of wine, a good book, and my Rubber Ducky for company.
