Lighting tips for the bathroom

The most important area of any bathroom is the mirror. Its the place we all start the day, either brushing our teeth, combing our hair or putting on our make up. With this in mind its equaly important to provide adequate lighting to perform these tasks, we don't want to face the world not looking our best do we!

To achieve this it is recommended to place wall lights on both sides of the mirror as this reduces the shadows on the face or alternately use a halogen strip light above the mirror.

This exquisitely designed Horizontal wall light fitting is ideal for use as a bathroom wall light

It is recommended to use halogen lighting whenever possible in the bathroom, as halogen lighting provides the most accurate light source available making sure that your skin tone and makeup colours are truly represented in the mirror.

More lighting tips for the bathroom

For general illumination for the rest of the bathroom it is considered best to use halogen down lights for their refreshing lighting, or a high output flush ceiling light that would suite the décor of your bathroom, alternately as portable lighting is not permitted in the bathroom a mounted directional spotlight can add atmosphere or interest to a specific feature.

IP Rating safety guide

Safety guide for IP ratings

Most bathroom lighting is IP rated. IP ratings are used where water is present near a light source. IP stands for Ingress Protection and consist of two digits, the fist value is between 0-6, the second 0-8.

The first digit represents protection against particles or foreign objects, the second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids and moisture.

Here is a list of all IP ratings and what they mean.

1st digit - protection from solid objects

0= no protection
1= protected against objects greater than 50mm
2= protected against objects greater than 12mm
3= protected against objects greater than 2.5mm
4= protected against objects greater than 1.0mm
5= protected against Limited dust ingress
6= protected against Total dust ingress

2nd digit - protection from moisture

1= Protected against condensation
2= Protected against water spray when tilted 15º
3= Protected against water spray when tilted 60º
4= Protected against water spray all directions
5= protected against weter jets
6= Protected against high pressure water jets all directions
7= Protected against immersion between 15cm and 1m depth
8= Protected against long term immersion to a specified pressure

For example this Titanium Flush Bathroom Ceiling Light is IP44 rated.

That means its protected against objects greater than 1.0mm and against water spray all directions.
