Redecorate your Bathroom

Do you wish to change your bathroom? Does your bathroom feel old, outdated, or just not your style? You can add a sense of elegance to any bathroom with accessories made from natural materials.

In this lens you will find bathroom accessories made from stone, cotton, jute, metal, wood and living plants. Natural materials go with any colored bathroom tiles and unify the strange color combinations that may be found in older bathrooms.

Natural Materials create a natural and peaceful feeling to any room. Imagine your bathroom looking like this....

Adding Natural Elements to Your Bathroom

Bathroom with Natural ElementsBathroom with Natural Elements

Living in a rented apartment can be difficult when it comes to decorating. What can you do without remodeling?

Natural elements can make the existing decor fade into the background. Instead of changing the countertops I added black rubber shelf liner. This comes in a woven style that adds texture as well as color. They can be cut to fit around the sink and are easily washed in the sink. I found it in the local supermarket.

Beach Mat Wall CoveringsBeach Mat Wall Coverings

Beach mats can be hung on the bathroom walls to disguise ugly tiles. I made collages from paper grocery bags, pressed leaves, seed coverings etc. for wall art and the beach mats made a perfect background. My bathroom was starting to look like an art gallery.

Adding plants gives your bathroom a life. Add candles for fire, a water feature, and river rocks scattered around the sink and you will have included all of the natural elements into your bathroom.

When choosing a shower curtains, bathroom towels and bathroom rugs look for cotton, jute or other natural fibers. Mix items that you buy on this lens with those you have in your home and you will have the bathroom of your dreams.

Redecorate Your Bathroom in 10 Easy steps

Bathroom ArtBathroom Art

Are you wondering how to decorate your bathroom? It can be done without changing the fixtures, retiling or even painting.

1. Remove everything that is not attached.
2. Clean all surfaces including the fan grates and behind the toilet.
3. Look through your things and pick one object that touches your soul. Notice the colors in that item. Those are the colors that you will focus on to decorate your bathroom.
4. Now go through your things and find as many as possible that go with your new color scheme.
5. Now look at the bathroom surfaces. Do they go with the color scheme or do you need to hid them?
6. Pick a shower curtain that goes with the color scheme.
7. Add towels.
8. Don't forget a book rack with books.
9. Make a few shrines or focal points around the room.
10. By using the colors that you like throughout the room you will create a room that you enjoy with that unified, put together feeling.

Covering Unwanted Bathroom Surfaces

Shelf LinerBlack Counter TopBlack Counter Top

Covering an ugly countertop with non-slip shelf liner as seen in the first picture will make your bathroom sink area warmer with a more natural feel.

Now add a few more natural touches to this bathroom and you have a vast improvement on the first picture. Notice the cotton bath towels, the green curtains and the wood picture frames.

But that is just the start. Each time you walk into your bathroom, take a look around and see where you could add a bit more of nature. My bathroom sink had ugly white Formica counter tops. I bought some black Wonder Liner shelf liner (See above) and covered the whole surface around the bathroom sink. Black reminds me of the dark rich soil of the forest. I added a glass vase with river rocks and a bamboo plant to make my bathroom come alive.

Then I placed a few bricks around the edge of the sink and scattered some sea shells around to begin my bathroom's transformation.

When thinking of making your bathroom have a more natural and peaceful feel to it, think about wood. Hanging wooden windchimes in an open window or from a plant bracket from the bathroom door adds not only wood but also peaceful sounds that remind you of a breeze blowing through.

Try adding a wooden bathroom stool for sitting or to hold a plant. A wooden bucket with natural bath soaps, a cotton shower curtain, and a basket to hold bathroom reading material also add to the natural feel of the bathroom..

Bathroom Plants

Plants in the BathroomPlants in the Bathroom

Plants can detract from stark white walls. Bathrooms are excellent for houseplants. Many houseplants are tropical in origin and need high humidity. Most houseplants, perched on a window ledge, do not do well with dim lighting or direct sunlight. They prefer diffused natural light. Artificial bathroom light, especially a combination of incandescent and fluorescent, also will work.

Soft Towels made from Natural Fibers

Cotton textiles make up half of the planet's fabric sales, therefore making a shift toward organic production will have a major beneficial impact on all of us by reducing toxic chemical human exposure and pollution to our air, water, food and land.

Organic crop production is based on a system of farming that doesn't use toxic synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides to replenish and maintain soil fertility. Supporting

Organic agriculture means toxic synthetic pesticide exposure can be reduced in our families and in our environment. It also helps to create a market transformation in which higher demand reduces costs and provides finished goods through more mainstream sources.

Finding a way to add a plant to our teensy tinsy bathroom would help wonderfully. You've inspired me to consider a bracket that mounts on the wall and holds a small, narrow pot. Perhaps a birdsfoot fern would fit.

One of my bathrooms could use a book rack and some plants :)

Fill lighting that would be the stronger ambient light source. Adding color with lighting is easy to do, and relaxing with a bubble bath!

Today I begin a new life.

I will live this day as if it is my last.
I will multiply my value a hundred fold.

Decorate your Bathroom with River Rocks and Sea Shells

Nature comes to your bathroom

Sea Shells in the Shower

Putting a few sea shells or river rocks in the corner of your bathroom can remind you of quiet strolls along the sea shore. Beeswax Candles bring back the romance of twinkling stars on a romantic evening.

Do you have a collection of antique bathroom items that could be arranged on the wall or possibly framed? We have a shaving mug and straight razor that my grandfather once used that we display on the bathroom shelf. The natural colors and the natural materials go well with the natural decor of the bathroom.

Bathroom Reading

Books to read in the Bathroom

Reading in the Bathroom

We always kid about the bathroom being the Reading Room but I find it is a great way to promote reading for my children and a way for me to catch up on quick bits of interesting non-fiction books such as the The Porcelain God, a book about the history of toilets or Bungalow Bathrooms, a book about bathroom decoration.

For the kids I like quick picture books like King Bidgood's in the Bathtub, a book about a King who enjoys his bath so much that he won't get out.

I keep these in a wooden basket near the toilet.

If you have kids, look into adding Word Walls to your bathroom. Use them to teach reading, memorize poetry or to learn a new language.

What do you read in the bathroom?

From Toilet History to Bathtub Mystery, what are you reading?

Bathroom Reading

I keep lots of non-fiction books in my bathroom. Books that can be read in small 5 minute chunks of time.

I rotate these books often and use the basket of books to try to spark interest in new ideas such as:

1. Learning a new language.
2. Finding out how the plumbing works.
3. Writing a better essay.
4. Decorating the bathroom,

I know I have succeeded in finding a good book when it disappears from the bathroom.

Water Features and the History of Toilets

Water Feature

Setting up a water feature amongst the plants can remind you of a waterfall on a woodland path. The sound of running water adds peace and harmony to your bathroom.

Make Burlap or Jute Curtains for your Bathroom

Add your own personal artistry to your bathroom

Burlap CurtainJute

Anyone can make curtains and burlap makes an inexpensive natural curtain. Because of the open weave of Burlap it is possible to cut some of the strings to make patterns in the curtain. Alternatively, the Jute Roman Shades take up less room in a small bathroom while still giving an earthy feel.

Natural Sea Sponges on the edge of the bathtub and metal artwork on the walls also add natural elements to your bathroom.

Wind Blowing through an open window with a springtime breeze blowing through can move the bells or tubes of wind chimes and add one more beautiful element to your bathroom.

Fire and Water

Keeping Balance in your Bathroom

Do You Have a Large Bathroom?

How about adding a fireplace?

Balancing out the variety of natural elements in your bathroom creates a more natural feel. Ventless Gas Fireplaces are now available so that a chimney is not necessary. If you already have a gas stove in your kitchen it would be fairly inexpensive to have a ventless gas fireplace installed in your bathroom. Now you can have both fire and water in your bathroom.

My favorite is their Peppermint Toothpaste with Baking Soda.
It leaves a cool refreshing taste in your mouth and because it has doesn't have saccerine it won't leave an aftertaste like the leading brands of toothpaste.

Tom's of Maine donates 10% of their profits to charitable organizations, have high standards of natural, sustainable, and responsible business practices and invest in cleaning up local waterways.

Their products are not tested on animals.
I highly recommend all of Tom's of Maine natural bathroom toiletries.

Bee & Flower Sandalwood Soap not only comes in a beautiful package but smells just as sweet.

From rose to sandalwood the natural smelling fragrances linger on your skin.

The soaps come in scents of jasmine, sandalwood, rose and ginseng.

The wrapping is of such high quality that I use it to make paper cranes to hang in the bathroom window on warm spring days.

The packaging is so beautiful that I buy several bars and display them in a basket in my bathroom.

Jute on eBay

Jute

Jute is one of the cheapest natural fibres and is second only to cotton in amount produced and variety of uses. Jute fibres are composed primarily of the plant materials cellulose (major component of plant fibre) and lignin (major components wood fibre). It is thus a ligno-cellulosic fibre that is partially a textile fibre and partially wood. It falls into the bast fibre category (fibre collected from bast or skin of the plant) along with kenaf, industrial hemp, flax (linen), ramie, etc. The industrial term for jute fibre is raw jute. The fibres are off-white to brown, and 1-4 meters (3-12 feet) long.

Jute

Jute plants (Corchorus olitorius and Corchorus capsularis)Jute fibre is often called hessian; jute fabrics are also called hessian cloth and jute sacks are called gunny bags in some European countries. The fabric made from jute is popularly known as burlap in North America.

Shower Heads for a natural waterfall sensation

Waterfall Shower

Changing a shower head is easy. You don't have to shut off the main water supply valve to do it. Just have the water shut off at the faucet, use a wrench to twist off the old shower head, wrap the white plumbers (usually included) around the threads and screw on the new shower head.

To tighten it without leaving marks you can wrap it in a rag before using the wrench.

Now you have a whole new look and feel to the shower.
