How do You Handle a Bathroom Ghost?

Large abandoned buildings do have their advantages. But pleasant trips to the bathroom don't seem to be one of them.

Have you ever been annoyed or harassed by a pesky bathroom ghost? This lens covers some basic information that might make it easier to deal with this issue, as well as a few tips that might help you get rid of your ghost - or at least make him a bit more friendly.

What is a Ghost?

The common definition of a "ghost" is a spiritual being which once was running a body until that body died, and is now hanging around or "haunting" a certain area. The spiritual being in question did not go to heaven or hell and did not get another body, but remained in some physical location (often the place where they lived before they died, or in some cases the location of the death itself).

Bathroom ghosts are relatively harmless. But they can be annoying, or even frightening.

There are different types of bathroom ghosts. Some are relatively friendly or simply curious. Others might be trying to scare you. In most cases, they are just confused beings who don't fully understand where they are or what they are doing. In some cases they might not even realize they are dead.

When bathroom ghosts (or any ghosts, for that matter) try to scare you, they are really just trying to create an effect. In other words, they are bored. Keep that in mind when you get the creeps or chills in a haunted area.

Put yourself in their position. Imagine that you have nothing to do all day (or all night) except hang around. You have no hands or feet. You can't even pick up a book to read it, nor can you play a video game. Then some human walks in. Well, this might be your only chance for some excitement!

Some ghosts will just come and look over your shoulder to see what you are doing. Some hide around corners and peak at you when they think you aren't looking. But the irritating types are the ones that try to scare you for amusement.

Moaning Myrtle - The Famous Bathroom Ghost

Possibly the most famous example of a bathroom ghost is "Moaning Myrtle" of the Harry Potter Series.

Moaning Myrtle did whine a lot, but she also provided valuable information and clues. So you can see that in some cases, bathroom ghosts can even be useful. Don't take them for granted so much. You never know when they might come in handy in helping you find a giant snake in your basement.

What Do You Do When You Encounter a Bathroom Ghost?

The following tips can help you with a Bathroom Ghost Encounter:

  • If the ghost is unfriendly, and trying to scare you, tell it no uncertain terms him to knock it the ____ off. Don't try to patronize and don't back off. When the ghost starts to realize it isn't creating the effect it wants, it will start to lose interest.
  • If the ghost starts sending you stupid scary messages, like "I'm going to kill you!" respond with something like "Yeah, and a lot of good that will do you! You're already dead!"
  • You can tell a belligerent ghost to knock it off. Tell it, "Look, I don't mind you hanging around if you are going to be nice, but behave yourself."
  • If the ghost is merely curious, say hello. Suggest a better haunting location other than the bathroom. If the ghost follows you out of the bathroom, and is still being nice, show him something interesting, such as the soup you are cooking or a project you are working on.
  • If the ghost is playing games, such as turning the lights on and off when you approach the bathroom, tell it to stop being silly, or laugh at the joke.
Note: I don't suggest you speak out loud to ghosts. Someone may overhear you and that can get you into trouble.

Very creative lens! I might try my hand at a bathroom haunt if I end up in purgatory.

Thank you - I'm glad you liked it. Please don't haunt my bathroom! Or if you do, be nice, and get the nasty ghost out of there!
