If You Plan to Shampoo Your Carpet, First Try Pre-Cleaning: Sweep the carpet, which will make the nap stand up and loosen the imbedded dirt. Next clean it with the vacuum. With this cleaning alone, the rug should show a noticeable improvement, so much in fact that you may decide to delay shampooing.
To Neutralize Odors: Use Borax and cornmeal. Sprinkle the carpet with a mixture of 1 cup Borax and 2 cups cornmeal. Let this mixture stand for an hour before vacuuming.
Carpet Freshener: Combine 3/4 cup baking soda, 2 tbs. corn starch, and 1/4 cup perfumed talcum powder. Sprinkle on dry carpet, let stand 5 to 15 minutes, then vacuum.
Surface Soils: Dry soil from shoes, crumbs, etc. may stay on the surface of the carpet a short time before working its way down into the carpet. This, along with litter such as paper, threads, etc. can be removed with a vacuum, light-weight stick vacuum (or "electric broom"), or even a carpet sweeper, if used promptly. These methods will also remove dust from the carpet surface. Pet hairs should be removed promptly, as the oil in them makes them cling to carpet, and work its way down into the pile.
Deep Soil : Gritty soil tracked on carpet by shoes, wet or dry, will sink down in between fibers of carpet. Gritty soil has very sharp edges capable of cutting carpet yarn fibers. Vacuuming is the best means of removing the grit from deep in between the carpet fibers. Moving the vacuum over the carpet seven times - forward and back, forward and back, forward and back, forward on the next section - should remove deep seated grit.
Room size oriental rugs are best cleaned with an agitator type cleaner. When approaching a fringed edge with an upright cleaner, lift up the cleaner nozzle by pushing down on the handle. This will allow cleaning to the fringe, but will raise the nozzle and avoid catching the fringe. When using a canister with a power nozzle, stop before reaching the fringed edge. Fringe may be cleaned with low suction, using the upholstery tool or floor brush.

We thought that the new tradition of going to my sister-in-law's home for the holidays was the reason that we were feeling a little deflated. After all, we had gone to his parents' home for years and years. But his parents were in attendance and they seemed a little let down, too. No one could put a finger on why there was the odd feeling that something very important was missing.

It wasn't until I went to another holiday affair that I realized what the significant difference between the events really was. There was no Christmas music. The absence of the holiday songs may not seem like a big deal but it makes a huge difference. The other celebration was warm and inviting and the Christmas music helped create an atmosphere fit for a grand event.

Have you ever thought about why we have some of the traditions that we do? I was thinking about this the over day as I was wrapping a gift to take to a baby shower that I was invited to. I am at the age where all of my friends are starting their families. This means that I am going to multiple baby showers. Two years ago we were going to multiple weddings so I guess the pattern fits. It does get to be expensive, especially when my husband and I are trying to save money to start our own family.

The reason I was thinking about traditions is that I was wondering who came up with the idea for baby shower games. Every shower that I go to there is some type of game that the hostess wants everyone to participate in. Most everyone groans when they hears that it is time for baby shower games. It seems like most people would rather sit and visit rather than participate in an activity. But for some reason someone from some where decided that participating in games was a necessary part of giving a baby shower.

One of my girl friends was giving a shower for our other friend. I offered to help with the event. One of the baby shower games that she came up with was quite clever. She had bought the mother to be one of the balls that has the different shapes cut in it. It is to help the young child figure out reasoning and different shapes. There are also the shapes included with the ball. The object is to place the star, crescent, square, circle, triangle and rectangle into the ball through the coordinating shaped hole. She also bought her the wooden puzzles that have five or six big pieces. She used these as the baby shower games. Each guest was timed to see how quickly they could put the puzzles together as well as match the shapes into the ball. The puzzles and ball was then given to the mom. This was quite fun to watch people trying to figure out the simple child games. I liked this game much better than the one our other friend had done. She had several different jars of baby food with the labels removed. We had to identify what each of the foods was. Just the smell of many of the foods was nauseating. Of course the women that have babies the age to eat baby food won that game.

I have decided that the next shower I host I will serve great finger foods and different things to drink and encourage people to just enjoy visiting with each other.
