Batman: The Long Halloween - A Review by Nevermore

Ranked #1,804 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #76,520 overall

My Review

I've been a long-time fan of Batman, from the excellent films (we'll forget about a couple of them...) to the stellar cartoon of the 90's, from the Arkham series of video games, to the masterfully penned and drawn comics that first brought him to life. The story told by Jeph Loeb in Batman: The Long Halloween is a follow-up to Batman: Year One by Frank Miller.

The story follows Batman as he investigates a series of murders, one a month, always on a holiday. A large cast of Batman's rogues make appearances throughout as Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and DA Harvey Dent investigate the murders.

This story, to some extent, turns away from the colorful cast of Batman villains, although they're present, they're more tools used by the larger crime syndicate run by Carmine Falcone, helping to further ground Gotham City in reality, as opposed to the colorful insanity of the Tim Burton Batman films.

Tim Sale's art lends quite a lot to making the world of Gotham City a real, believable place, and does a terrific job of showing the mood of each individual panel, with heavy use of shadows and a lot of carefully constructed images for the action sequences, giving a real flow to the set pieces.

Four and a half stars out of five for this thrilling Batman mystery, definitely recommended for Batman fans, particularly fans of the Christopher Nolan series of films, as the Long Halloween and Batman: Year One are major sources of inspiration for those works.
