Batman today remains the most recognized fictional character, leaving behind his superhero theme and attaining the popularity of other greats like Sherlock Holmes and Dracula. Batman is a modern legend, and this year, the latest adventure stetches our Caped Crusader even further. In Batman: RIP, the Dark Knight comes face to face with powerful personal attacks, in an attempt to crack him.

The story of RIP was started long before the storyline by Grant Morrison. Batman is under assault by the Black Glove. The Black Glove knows a much about Bruce Wayne, both costumed and as a civilian. The first attack is brutal: His girlfriend is taken, and Bruce is driven insane by an implanted keyword and injected with halucogenic drugs. The villain of the Black Glove tries to destroy a good man and enslave him.

Bruce Wayne in anticipation, had created a second personality. This 2nd Batman is based on a story involving an alien from a distant planet. This Batman is inspired by the real Batman, and tackles criminals in his honor. Our distant Batman acquires powers similar to Superman. The suppressed personality, the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, is a perfect Batman who is unstoppable in his search for justice, and is a pure machine. He strikes back against those who try to stop him, until he is broken, due to the Joker and his girlfriends betrayal. The Black Glove tries to bury Batman and then damage his corpse beyond recognition.

Our superhero awakens from the attack and snaps out of his second personality state and strikes back at his enemies, after having assessed their weaknesses, and destroys them. What RIP represents is not his physical. Bruce Wayne emerges out of RIP alive, but his spirit is truly shaken.

Grant Morrison wrote this story with the intent of challenging the Dark Knight, but also of reinstating Batman's weird history.
