ONE TOUCH CAN OPENER - A HURRICANE ESSENTIAL
What a wonderful surprise - the One Touch Can Opener works exactly as advertised! Fortunately, Texas has not been hit (at this point) by a 2010 hurricane. But we have had some strong thunderstorms that knocked out the power, and I had the opportunity to put my OneTouch Can Opener to work. It is so easy to use!! I am glad this has been added to my hurricane readiness kit.
Each year as hurricane season approaches, I have learned to prepare. Every year, after the hurricane has passed, I become aware of another "essential" item that can make life without power a little easier. I have yet to find the One Touch Can Opener on a list of recommended hurricane supplies. However, having survived Hurricane Ike, without electricity and the convenience of an electric can opener, I was determined to have a battery operated can opener ready for the upcoming hurricane season. My research led me to the One Touch Can Opener.
Of course, there are other cordless can openers available. I have found the perfect solution in the One Touch Can Opener. It uses two AA batteries and with the power of two batteries, this wonderful kitchen helper can open 100 cans. It will open cans of all sizes. If you have ever opened a large coffee can with the old hand powered opener, you can appreciate the importance of this little gadget. The One Touch Can Opener cuts from the side to eliminate sharp edges which makes it safe for helpful children. The magnet on the underside easily lifts the lid from the can without a mess. It is reasonably price and, most important of all, it works! Campers also love the One Touch Can Opener and it has become part of the necessary camping gear for many.
The new design of the One Touch Can Opener has been improved with the battery compartment on the side. This provides access to the batteries in the event they fail during the cutting process. Simply open the compartment, replace the batteries and finish cutting.
NOTE: THE ONE TOUCH BATTERY OPERATED CAN OPENER IS ALSO A GREAT ADDITION TO THE CAMPING GEAR!!
UPDATE ON MY ONE TOUCH CAN OPENER
I have had my One Touch Can Opener for over a year and have not had to replace the batteries! It has been a life saver during power outages throughout the year - not even hurricane related. I strongly recommend this inexpensive gadget. It's very easy to use and would be great for anyone that has difficulty using can openers.
REVIEWS BY USERS OF ONE TOUCH CAN OPENER

After surviving Hurricane Ike and eight days without electricity, I am determined to be better prepared. During my research to find the perfect cordless can opener, I found the following reviews:
From Audrie's Place: "I ordered this item as a hope to find a solution for my kids who want to help in the kitchen but have difficulty operating the can openers, electric or manual. Be sure to get the newer version. Many reports of the original version getting stuck on cans when the batteries went dead. . . Used daily, we have opened countless cans since Christmas and no signs of battery wear yet. And yes it really does open the can with no sharp edges!"
From M. M. Prosser: "This is the greatest little invention going, especially if you have any hand, joint or tendon issues, as I do. I no longer have to ask for help to open a can, small or large. It's hands free and fit in a drawer. Just needs batteries and you;re good to go!"
David Wemman wrote: "My wife has a terrible time opening cans with a standard electric can opener so I thought I'd try one of these just for the heck of it. She loves it, I love it and it is NOT a gimmick - it really works great. The batteries seem to last forever. It makes smooth, clean cuts, and shuts itself off after it makes the cut. Everyone ought to have one of these."
Denise Durand wrote: "From someone who suffers with painful hand and finger joints due to Rheumatoid Arthritis, this product is a blessing. I had read reviews prior to purchasing and was somewhat weary after reading some of the negative reviews. Thankfully when I received the product it works like a charm. I think the negative reviews I read were sent in by people who did not take time to read the directions properly. I can say I am absolutely satisfied."
Dr. Charles Finch wrote: "Follow the directions and keep good batteries in this device and it will effortlessly open can after can. I have two and my wife loves them. She can't use manual openers because of weakness and arthritis. The One Touch gives her independence. How much is that worth?"

TEXAS HURRICANES
Hurricane Alicia in 1983 was my first personal encounter with a hurricane. Less than a year after moving to Sugar Land, Texas, Alicia came to visit and create havoc. Having been born and raised in southern California, I had experienced earthquakes, was rescued in the middle of the night from a flooded house, lost paint on my car to a desert sand storm, and was well acquainted with the Santa Ana winds. After living several years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I had learned to drive on snow and ice and experienced some severe wind storms. But I was not ready for a hurricane. With Alicia's visit, I quickly learned that fear of the unknown is a powerful emotion.
When Alicia hit, we were totally unprepared. We had no battery operated radio or TV, no candles, no extra supply of batteries for the one flashlight. The power was off for three days. We had no phone service. We were isolated, or so it seemed. But it was definitely a learning experience.
Through the years, we had prepared for various hurricanes predicted to hit our area. Thankfully, we were better prepared for hurricanes that missed our area. And then along came Ike! Electricity in my home was off for eight days - some areas suffered through weeks with no power. Better prepared for Ike and yet it was another learning experience. I watched TV on my old miniature black and white portable TV - until all my batteries were dead and the stores that were open (many were closed for days) had no batteries. As I watched the TV coverage from nearby Galveston and towns located all around Houston, I had a new perspective on Ike. I lost food in the big freezer, a power surge knocked out some part in the refrigerator (discovered when the power came on), tree limbs covered the yard, and a block away many large oak trees were completed uprooted and spread across streets and some trees fell into houses. With no power, there was no air conditioning and it was hot! But I still had my home. Galveston and many other towns lost lives, homes, businesses and boats; it looked like a war zone.
Again, Ike taught some lessons. This hurricane season I am better prepared - a new One Touch cordless can opener, a portable color digital TV, and a battery operated fan are now part of my hurricane arsenal. These, of course, are merely creature comforts in the event power is lost. The important and necessary hurricane supplies are also in place. The one thing that I have not learned is how to be fearless when the anticipated hurricane arrives. For me, a hurricane is the most frightening natural disaster. I do pray before, during and after the hurricane. As one of my friends said, "A hurricane like Ike is a real come to Jesus call for non-believers".
BE READY FOR POWER OUTAGE WITH CORDLESS CAN OPENER
LIFE WITHOUT POWER AFTER HURRICANE IKE
Homes and businesses struggled without power. Driving in any area hit by Hurrican Ike, created a whole new set of problems and disaster. Most signal lights were out and there were too few traffic cops to direct traffic at every intersection. For some reason, many people seemed to forget that when signal lights are out, it is a four way stop. As a result, there were numerous car accidents that could have been avoided.

- Isn't this can opener the greatest? I love mine and it was really great to buy something and learn that it works exactly as advertised!! We didn't have a hurricane in the Houston area this year, but I was still able to use my One Touch Can Opener! We seem to have frequent power outages.

- The can openers may just be another simple appliance for some people but this really plays a crucial part of saving as well, if you're running a tight budget, the West Bend Can Opener is the best that you can have.
