Background Information about the "Battle at Kruger" Video

The "Battle at Kruger" is an almost 8.5 minute-long video now playing on YouTube.com which has had more than 44.2 million viewings since it was first posted to the Web in early May 2007.  The video, shot by amateur photographer David Budzinski in Kruger National Park in South Africa (and posted to YouTube by his fellow safari tourist Jason Schlosberg), depicts a real-life wildlife event in which a cape buffalo calf is separated from its herd by a pride of hungry lions.

Background Information about the "Battle at Kruger" Video (continued)

While the baby buffalo struggles at the edges of a watering hole to escape from the lions, two crocodiles suddenly appear and attempt to wrestle the buffalo away from the lions to drag it further into the water to a different doom. The lion pride then pulls the small buffalo from the jaws of the crocodiles and resumes attacking it. Just when it appears that all is lost for the baby cape buffalo, the buffalo herd surrounds the pride of lions and comes to its rescue. The buffaloes charge the lions and one of the lions is thrown into the air by the horns of a courageous bull. The buffaloes ultimately succeed in chasing the lions away from the baby buffalo and the surrounding area, and miraculously, the young buffalo then stands up again and rejoins its herd.

This is an exciting wildlife drama similar to those seen frequently in "National Geographic" television specials and on the BBC's "Planet Earth" series and it represents both a very fortunate filming opportunity for an amateur videographer and a testament to the bravery of these animals in protecting the most helpless members of their herd.

In addition to becoming one of YouTube's most watched videos ever, this short film has already been the subject of a TIME magazine article and a featured story on the ABC network's new "i-CAUGHT" television program. Starting on the evening of Sunday, May 11, 2008 (Mother's Day); it also became the subject of a National Geographic Channel special, entitled, "Caught on Safari: Battle at Kruger".
