The Forgotten Battle of Hurtgen Forest

The Deadliest US Battle of WW2

America's longest battle and one of its most costly yet nobody seems to have heard of it, what's more nobody seems to know why it was fought. The Battle of Hurtgen Forest was fought fought between the Americans and the Germans during the latter stages of World War II . The battle took place between September 1944 and February 1945, in a strip of about fifty square miles on the Belgian-German border.

The American High Command was flush with success after the breakout at Normandy and hoped they could quickly break through and push further into Germany. Multiple divisions were sent in, only to be wrecked and replaced by still more divisions. Even with armor, air, and artillery support, all advantages held by the Americans were nullified by the forest terrain. Despite smaller numbers, the Germans were able to delay the stronger American force thanks to the difficult terrain and good defensive positions.

It was the perfect battleground for an over-stretched German army. The Germans were heavily entrenched in the forest and inflicted heavy casualities in the longest battle the American Army has ever fought in its history. The Germans inflicted well over 24,000 casualties on American forces during the battle. The Americans suffered an additional 9,000 casualties due to fatigue, illness and friendly fire. Up to 12,000 German lives were also claimed. Despite this, Hürtgenwald is largely forgotten as the Battle of the Bulge which after many reverses turned into total defeat for the German Army totally erased any advantage the Germans had gained.

Some of the troops fighting in the Hürtgen Forest also fought at Omaha Beach and they said that the Hürtgen was a much bloodier fight than Omaha beach. Ernest Hemingway described the battle as "Passchendaele with tree bursts" which is an appropriate epitaph.

The Deadly Kall Trail Battle of Hurtgen Forest

A Tank trap

A lovely track for hiking in the fall but a deadly trap for tank attacks. It easy to mine and ambush tanks who could only attack in single file. Knock out the lead tank and the job was done. The Americans could advance down the trail but the German troops could infiltrate from behind at will.

What was the point of the Battle of Hurtgen Forest?

Although I'm interested in military history I haven't been able to discover exactly why this battle was started. There was a vague notion that it would ease pressure on troops further north. Once started the Generals became to reluctant to admit they were wrong.

Gi's Take a Break in Hurtgen Forest

Not a good place to be a hero because nobody will ever know!

Lesson of History: The Best Army can lose in harsh terrain.

If you go hiking a lot you will surely know a densely wooded area, woods where without compass you can easily get lost. Well imagine these same woods sown with land mines, booby traps, dynamite sticks tied to trees, concrete pillboxes buried into the hill side. Now imagine you are a stranger to the area and asked to attack these woods in winter. High-command sent American troops into the woods and couldn't keep track of them whether they were making progress, were held up, needed munitions or whatever, they didn't know where the battle-lines were or where the Germans were.

It was a nightmare so they just sent more divisions into the wood after all that had always worked before, the American military machine could always overwhelm any enemy.

In these terrible conditions crack regiments could do no better that regular troops, they all entered the meat-grinder just the same.

Charles Whiting who wrote about the battle would compare Hurtgen with the future Vietnam where American soldiers would once again be in impossible terrain with unclear objectives and no regular battle lines others would compare it to the The Battle of the Wilderness 1864
.

General Field Marshal Walter Model (1891-1945)

General Field Marshal Walter Model 1944The German General in charge of defending the Hurtgen Forest could not have been more determined and able. with capture looming and wanted by the Soviets he committed suicide. Hürtgen was so costly that it has been called an Allied "defeat of the first magnitude", with specific credit being assigned to Model.

Battle of Hurtgen Forest Reader Feedback

Although the battle is often classified as a defeat however strategically it was burning up German resources and manpower albeit in the most clumsy and inefficient way. Success at Hurtgen gave the German Army time to prepare the ultimately disastrous (for the German Army) Ardennes Offensive better know as the Battle of the Bulge.

Do you agree that the troops who fought this battle should be brought out of the forest and honored?

I have heard of this battle, and it was a really bloody engagement. The 101st Airborne were involved here as well I believe, and attacking in such terrain where everything is in favor of the defender is extremely costly and demoralizing. Good resource, blessed.

This is so interesting to read, because I had not heard of this battle. Wow!
Thank you for sharing an important part of American and German history.

Shall be featuring this on Veterans of War. I'm amazed I hadn't read about this before.

History loves decisive battles such as Gettysburg, Waterloo and Austerlitz miserable slugging matches like Hurtgen Forest get swept under the carpet. Thank you so much for blessing this lens which I hope helps the soldiers who fought there get a little bit more recognition.
