Battlefield Earth

Battlefield Earth is a science fiction story written and conceived by L Ron Hubbard.

It was written in the 'Golden Age' of science fiction and was written by a writer whose mainstream writing was normal fiction and he was asked by his employer to start and write science fiction, thus Battlefield Earth was born.

Battlefield Earth is a love and hate thing, love the book, hate the film. It is as simple as that.

Battlefield Earth Synopsis

In the year 3000 AD, Earth has been ruled by an alien race, the Psychlos, for a millennium. Humanity has been reduced to a few scattered tribes in isolated parts of the world while the Psychlos strip the planet of its mineral wealth. Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, a member of one such tribe, lives in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. He leaves his village to explore the lowlands and to disprove the superstitions long held by his people involving ancient gods and monsters. However, he is captured in the ruins of Denver by Terl, the Psychlo chief of security. The Psychlos, hairy 9-foot high, 1000-pound sociopaths, originate from a planet with an atmosphere very different from that of earth. Their "breath-gas" explodes on contact with even trace amounts of radioactive metals, such as uranium. From the very beginning, the reader learns that Terl has discovered a lode of gold up in the Rocky Mountains that he wants to get his hands on "off the company books" but is surrounded by uranium deposits that make Psychlo mining impossible. Terl captures Jonnie by accident while searching for "man-animals" to train to mine where he himself cannot.

My Review of the Incredibly Bad Battlefield Earth Film

Battlefield Earth

This has got to be the worst sci-fi film ever made even worse than 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' at least Ed Wood tried to make a good film. All the makers of this film tried to do was to flush millions of dollars down the toilet and succeeded royally.

I wouldn't even recommend you watched the film to see how bad it is. And don't whatever you do buy the film... You have been WARNED!!!

One of the reasons Battlefield Earth was so incredibly bad is that it was supposed to made into TWO films not one. The film only covers 436 pages of the 1,050-page book and reveals the destruction of Psychlo long before it did in the book.

Battlefield Earth definitely SUCKS!

TalkingBull says:

This was by far the WORST movie I have ever seen. The premise alone is intellectually insulting and the climax was like getting spat in the face by my high school science teacher because I raised my hand in class. I want someone to please invent time travel so we can go back in time and correct the inexcusable mistake that is this film!

I have absolutely no taste, I like it!

More Bad Book to Film Conversions

There are many books that do not translate to film well, they have to be hacked up and changed to a more visual friendly format. Some books get translated very well but others end up like Battlefield Earth, thankfully though not as bad.

Here are a choice of Amazon products, Films that either were bad book conversions or that had huge chunks missed out to fit into an acceptable film length.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Dune had huge bits chopped and in places they didnt make sense. Thankfully though they fixed Dune a little bit by releasing an extended cut.

Don't take me wrong I like all of these films shown in this module but readers of the books have to agree that they are lacking things that were in the books.

I read the Battlefield Earth novel long before the film was ever made. L Ron Hubbard is an excellent story teller and Battlefield Earth unfolds before you like any good novel should. He masterly blends science fiction into a story full of adventure, suspence and yes, even some romance.

Buy this book, forget the totally rubbish film and enjoy this story in the format that the author intended it to be enjoyed in.
