Battle in Seattle

Hollywood dramatization of the 1999 WTO protest in Seattle

Battle is Seattle starts by explaining why the protesters are so angry with the WTO.

An opening montage sequence gives everyone a little history lesson on GATT (1947), and then explains global trade tariffs and the 'rise of the corporations'.

The narrator explains how the WTO was born from corporate avarice. The opening monologue lists lots of good reasons to hate the Organization as the film's visuals detail the pain and suffering that is present today in the mines, mills and factories of the Third World. Also evidenced is the WTO's complete disregard for all environmental concerns and humanitarian issues. The protesters believe that the WTO is a failure of capitalism driven by big business taking profit.

Inside this unique conflict are profound 'war stories' and a clash of ideals that will keep North American audiences thinking about their place in the New World Order. Woody Harrelson (Dale) and Charlize Theron (Ella)'s storyline dominates the plot and drives the story, but in the background is the heart wrenching journey of the doctor who just wants to fight AIDS in Africa, and Ray Liotta's desperation as the Mayor of Seattle.
