Basic Rules for Battleships Over Twitter

Playing Ad-Hoc Games with your Twitter Friends

The rules for Battleships Over Twitter can be found on the Paper Battle Ships document, listed in the links following these Basic Rules. Essentially, it plays like regular Battleships(tm), but over Twitter.

However, there are some conventions to stick to!

What's Your Channel, Buddy?

To help keep tabs on the BoT players, we've decided that the #twitships channel should be reserved for Battleships Over Twitter games. Please respect the guidelines for using this channel for the good of the community.

Assigning a battlename

So you can use Summize.com to track your own games, it is recommended to choose a battlename between the two players. Of course, Tournament matches will have a specific naming convention (see below), but Ad-Hoc players can pick their own.

Calling the Shots

Shots are called by Tweeting on the #twitships channel, using the pre-arranged battlename, the opponents Twitter ID, and a row, col convention.

This looks like the following:

  • #twitships MeVsYou @leckyt 3,E
(The above assumes both players are using the Paper Battle Ships document, listed below.)

The response should follow the same pattern, ending with H or M. (Hit or Miss). Players can add a little message of their own by leaving a space after the H or M, and continuing.

It is important to stick to the convention, because the official TwitShips Client software will only work in this way!

To play competitions, the organizer should first register a battlename with players, to identify the Tournament from all the others that are going on. Although every player will user the #twitships channel (because the TwitShips Client will use that medium), each battlename will be unique.

To identify rounds within the Tournament, the following convention is used:

  • battlename-F : Final
  • battlename-SF : Semi Final
  • battlename-QF : Quarter Final
  • battlename-round-x : Round X
Tournament owners should ensure that Players respect these conventions.
