Old streets

The old heart of Bayeux is compact and centred on an area to the south and east of the Cathedral of Our Lady.

The main shopping street, which also has many of the best restaurants, is south of the cathedral running East-West parallel to the cathedral. The older, cobbled streets, like the ones shown, lie at the east end of the cathedral. Quieter than the main street, there are a number of smaller bistrios but also residential premises and some offices.

Bayeux War Cemetry

Bayeux is the largest of the Commonwealth war cemetries in France with 4144 WW II Commonwealth burials, of which 338 are unidentified. There are also a small number of graves of soldiers of other nationalities, mostly German. Bayeux War Cemetry is located opposite the Bayeux Monument (which lists the names of 1,800 soliders who have no known burial site) and near the D Day Museum.

This video gives a good picture of Bayeux War Cemetry and is very sensitively produced, with a soundtrack of Abide by Me. As one commentator said, "You will not often find victor and vanquished laying side by side as here."

On 6th June 2009, HRH Prince Charles and the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, joined veterans and other guests in Bayeux Cathedral to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the D Day landings.

Where we stayed

We stayed 3 nights in Le Tardif. The French lover to categorise things and they list Le Tardiff as a "Noble Guesthouse". That doesn't matter much; it's a high class B&B. What we loved was:

Great location - just a couple of minutes walk from the cathedral

Period mansion - real atmosphere

We had a great room with a lovely bathroom

Friendly owners - really helpful

Parking on the private drive

Guest access is via their own courtyard rather than through the main house

The are a couple of potential negatives. Our room, and at least one of the others. Was up a narrow staircase. The owner kindly carried my case for me but unless you can get a ground-floor room this property wouldn't suit anybody with walking difficulties. The furninshing were also old-fashioned - many antique, but not fancy. I happen to quite like that but if you prefer a contemporary look, then you will be disappointed.

If we go back to Bayeux, this is where we will stay. I've never booked with LetsBookHotel.com but I've linked it here because it has lots of photos of Le Tardif. Click on any thumbnail to see the full size image.
