Free or Paid services?
You'll find two basic types of dating sites: free sites and paid sites. While the free sites offer the obvious advantage of "no fees", there are many drawbacks that lie beneath their fee-free surface. On the flipside, the fee at the paid sites does get you a little more: they're optimized to elevate your user experience and then they also offer certain forms of general safety for their users.
Whichever way you go, just keep in mind that not all dating sites are equal. You'll get what you pay for - or don't pay for, in the case of the freebies. With a free site, you may be putting yourself at risk, opening yourself up to possible danger.
Dating sites are businesses, just like any other service. But if that's the case, how can the so-called free sites operate without charging for their services? Basically - you won't get the best tools for dating on the free sites. That certainly means no webcam chatting or video hosting capabilities. But an even bigger concern: customer service. If you have questions or run into trouble, you probably won't get a quick answer. You'll be lucky at all if a fee-free dating site offers a customer support phone number.
Besides fewer features and virtually no customer service, the free sites do give you something: you will see a flood of advertisements every time you log on. They will bombard you with banner pop-ups and pop-unders. They'll also be dumping e-mail advertising on you - at least once a week. And in case you want more - they may sell your personal information to big advertising networks.
Still think you can make a free dating site work for you?
Let's say you join a free dating site and you find someone that interests you. First, you spend a few weeks e-mailing with each other. The time is right - so you start talking on the phone. After a great virtual relationship, you both decide you're ready to meet in person. This was a free dating site. Which means - there was probably no screening done on the members. So this person could be virtually anyone. Hi or her images and personal information could be completely false. This person might have even deliberately created a fake personality in order to convince you to meet in person. Regrettably, this isn't all that unusual - it happens every day. Just because this person is misleading you doesn't always mean he or she intends to harm you, but unfortunately, sometimes that is exactly what he or she plans.
Consider this scenario: You agree to meet with this person from the free dating website, and you are robbed or otherwise assaulted; what information about your date can you tell the police? There's no credit card or other payment information on record for this person. So how are police going to go about locating him or her?
The problems and drawbacks listed above just don't exist on paid dating sites. While you certainly will pay for their dating service, the trade off is a much more pleasant experience. And it's an experience that won't include paid ads or junk e-mail.
The user interface for paid dating sites will feature elaborate search functions for its members. And when you find potential matches, you'll be able to communicate in several ways besides e-mail - some sites offer instant messaging or even webcam chatting.
The best feature of a paid dating site, at least in my opinion, is a subtle one. If you got lucky in love and decided to actually meet someone fact-to-face, you'll know the site has his or her real information on file.
