The BD-5 "Microjet" -- Tiny, but Fast in the Air!

Ranked #917 in Entertainment, #10,687 overall

The BD-5 (Jet Version) was what James Bond used in his opening scene escape in the movie "Octopussy"

It's a classic scene -- James Bond (Roger Moore) in the movie "Octopussy" is doing some undercover investigation of a hostile foreign country's new radar units on their fighter jets... he's dressed like a high-ranking military officer of that foreign country (Cuba?). He's snooping around the aircraft hanger (which is near where the dictator of the country is watching a horse show). And he gets caught. Ah well.

Then, as he's being hauled away in an open troop transport truck, his assistant agent (very attractive female) pulls her open jeep alongside the truck and distracts Bond's guards. He knocks them off the truck and then jumps over to the jeep. She parks the jeep and Bond then goes around to what seems to be a horse trailer that she was towing. The fake (!) horse's tail end lifts up, and Bond pulls out of the trailer in a tiny jet that had been hidden inside.

The jet? The BD-5j Microjet!

Bond flies the jet with some awesome maneuverability and evades a heat-seeking missile by flying through the hanger that he had been captured in. Bond and the BD-5 make it through the hanger... but the missile.... well, he doesn't have to worry about destroying the radar unit and fighter planes in the hanger.

This scene is an exciting introduction to this interesting aircraft.

The Little Plane that Could!

BD-5j in Bare Shiney Aluminum Mode -- Ooh, Shiney! The BD-5 (or Bede 5) comes in two forms--a jet form called the BD-5j and the propeller form, called the BD-5p. Both are tiny aircraft but are full function, highly maneuverable aircraft. They started in the 1970s as "kit-planes" and from there have been a novelty on airfields. Some have even been used as test aircraft for the U.S. Military.

I actually got to meet Mr. Bede some 20+ years ago. He was a very creative aviation designer. Nice lens on the BD-5, James Bedes' best design.

You can see the BD-5 in action in this James Bond movie -- Octopussy. In the opening scene, Bond escapes from his plight in the BD-5 and flies some eye-popping maneuvers that will thrill any aircraft enthusiasts. Just seeing this aircraft fly makes getting this movie worth it (well, it's also a good Bond movie, too!).
