My First Hafla
Oh the NERVES!
I can still remember my first halfa. Our teacher always has a holiday hafla with food and gifts, and, of course, dancing. I had no idea what to expect. Because I had only in class for one year, I was terrified at the thought of performing in front of people. But once I was there it was no big deal. Everyone was so happy and mellow, there was no pressure at all. I think laid back haflas are the best, if someone wants to perform they can let the coordinator know in advance for the music, but after the scheduled performances, just put on some music and let everyone dance! Just be sure to enjoy yourself! What to Expect
be prepared
- Will there be food? If so - is it pot luck? Also ask if there is any sort of theme. You don't want to show up with apple pie if everything is supposed to be middle eastern.
- Is everyone expected to bring a secret gift? If so, what is the price range? You don't want to be the only one showing up without something to share, so be sure to ask about this as many holiday haflas have a secret Santa type of gift exchange.
- Who will be performing? Will the performances be before or after we eat? You need to know when you will perform in specific. If it is to be after you eat, you may want to eat something light.
- Can anyone get up and dance - is it a free for all? Usually at private gatherings there is a time for free dance, usually towards the end of the hafla, after scheduled performances.
- Can you record a video? Are pictures OK? Many will let you take pictures, but video is not always OK, especially if choreographed performances are expected. Some dancers fear their new dance moves may be stolen.
- Will there be alcohol? If so, can you bring some? Many private hafla gatherings do allow alcoholic beverages, but make sure you bring something nice, like wine, or champaign, are be sure to share!
Finding that perfect gift.
That Perfect Costume
Look Fabulous!
As with any holiday hafla - lots of pictures will be taken. You will want to look your best for the event. As any belly dancer knows, it can become an addiction, and this addiction can become expensive as far as costumes go. But you can find great deals on full costumes, or a particular piece on ebay. Many of these are new shipped directly from the maker.

Share your pictures!
If you can, make sure to take lots of pictures. Dancers usually love to have their pictures taken during performances to look over later, so be sure to upload them to a site like flickr and send them a link! These middle of performance pictures usually make for the very best ones to add to your collection.
Hafla time!
