How to avoid Jet lag
You know what I hate most about long distance travel? That sluggish feeling and general fuzziness that usually clears about two days after arrival (by which time I am invariably leaving!).
I am, of course, referring to jet lag. I always hoped that I would somehow develop immunity to it but apparently it does not quite work that way!

Good News!
Arline rewards
The good news, however, is that there are ways to beat jet lag and I am going to share them with you. Alright, I will be honest, you probably cannot beat jet lag but you can at least alleviate it somewhat. With this new found information, my accumulated airline rewards are about to get a workout! I'm ready to book my dream vacation (If you don't know what having an airline credit card can do to help you make your dream vacation a reality, check out this guide.)
Smart Ways to Overcome Jet Lag:
Effective ways to overcome Jet lag

- Plan smart
- Love the liquids
- Expose yourself
- Do not cheat
- Score some pills
- Chill out
Where possible, plan your trip to accommodate the fact that you will be jet lagged. Try and give yourself at the very least a half day to acclimatise. There is no point scheduling meetings for when you will undoubtedly be in a zombie-like state with minimal functionality!
No, I am not talking about the free alcohol! Try and resist the temptation to see exactly how many miniature bottles of Jack Daniels make up a big one. Alcohol is dehydrating and dehydration exacerbates fatigue which is the hallmark of jet lag. Water is your friend. Drink it in huge amounts. As well as keeping you wonderfully hydrated, it will force you to get up and exercise as you walk to the bathroom thereby reducing the risk of forming blood clots - don't you love a multi-purpose solution?
This does not involve trench coats, parks or flashing! When you arrive at your destination, if it is day time, rather than holing up in your hotel room with the latest Grisham novel, or watching today's episode of Glee on your handheld device or the TV, get outside and expose your body to some sunlight. No matter the time on your internal clock, the light will signal to your body that it is day time and you should be awake. Maybe do a bus tour of the city or something that will keep you moving.
Your morals are purely your business. All I mean is you should keep your bedtime the same - do not cheat. If you normally go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 6am then do exactly the same even if your body is telling you it is actually 5am as you hit the pillow.
Something pharmaceutically approved, not to help you sleep (because by the time you get to bed you will probably be wiped out) but to help you stay asleep. Your body will wake up at its normal time which is fine at home but sucks if it is 2am in your host country. They say melatonin works wonders! Check at your local pharmacy.
Try and keep your room as dark and as cool as is comfortable. The drop in temperature somehow signals to your body that it is bedtime (think about how hard it is to get up in winter!).

Eventually you will find out what works for you, but hopefully these tips can give you a handy head start.Of course, you could always save your free airline tickets for a more local trip to avoid crossing too many time zones, or decide to take a road trip instead.
