Be Truly Cruelty Free

Are you Truly Living Cruelty Free?

If you love animals then you've probably heard the term cruelty free. Cruelty free refers to products (e.g. make-up) or lifestyle choices (e.g. vegetarianism) that do not cause harm to animals. I hope that this lens can prove to you that living cruelty free can be easy and beneficial to you as well as animals. And you can feel good about the fact that you'll be saving animal lives in the process!

This site is not to convince or scare/sicken you into a cruelty free life. There are no graphic pictures or horror stories of animal testing. This site is for people who know how terrible animal testing is and are working towards a a cruelty-free life to help them achieve that goal.

Update: I contacted Energizer, maker of Schick, Playtex, Hawaiian Tropic and other personal care products, about their process since I could not find any information on their animal testing policy. They answered that no animal testing is performed at any stage of their products manafacturing. Yay for another win!

The Truth About Animal Cruelty

type=textBeing a vegetarian or a vegan and refusing to wear fur are great ways to be cruelty free, but there are many other ways to continue this task. For one, many corporations that make consumer goods, such as Procter and Gamble (e.g. Pantene Pro-V and Herbal Essences producers), Covergirl, Maybelline (cosmetics) and Johnson & Johnson test their products on innocent and defenseless animals. This causes much needless continued agony and pain for the test animals and often leads to their death. As an animal lover who also is interested in fashion, I found this information especially upsetting. Luckily, through intense research, I found a multitude of animal friendly companies at both the high-end designer and drugstore levels. So persons of all walks of life can live cruelty free! If companies, such as OPI, Revlon, and Sun Laboratories (laundry detergent) can create quality products without animal suffering, then there is no excuse for any company to do so.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

Things You May Not Know About Animal Testing

1. Animal testing for cosmetics and household products is not required by the FDA or the Consumer Product Safety Commission for safety for humans. Also, many other ways have been created to test the effectiveness of a product for humans without causing animal suffering (E.g. past research information, synthetic skin, etc.)

2. Mice and rats are excluded from the Animal Welfare Act statistics, therefore, the actual number of animals used in product testing is unknown, but grossly more than reported.

3. Claims about animal testing on products' labels are not regulated by any state or federal entity. Thus, terms like "not tested on animals" or "cruelty-free" maynot be true in actuality. Animal testing can occur anywhere within the manufacturing process. So, if a product does not test its "final" product on animals, it may test it all the way up to that point. It also might say that it is not tested on animals, but the ingredients could be or could be purchased from companies that are known to test on animals.

4. Animal testing for cosmetics has been banned in a number of European countries.

Thank you for such an informative article! Please remember, though, when it comes to animal testing only one list is truly cruelty-free -- that is Leaping Bunny.

Oftentimes, products claim to be "cruelty-free" or "not tested on animals,? but their claims may only refer to the finished product. As you may be aware, the majority of animal testing occurs at the ingredient level. Similarly, some companies may state, ?We do not test on animals,? when in fact they merely contract other companies to do the testing. These kinds of claims are often confusing and misleading for consumers.

The Leaping Bunny Program offers not just a list, but a Standard?the only Standard that guarantees a product free of new animal testing. While many ingredients have been tested on animals in the past, the Standard is designed to prevent future animal testing and eventually drive animal testing out of the industry completely! In addition, the Leaping Bunny Standard is internationally recognized. Formed from the nation's largest animal protection groups, the CCIC also partners with animal protection groups in Canada and Europe.
