How to provide your own phone and cable for no money at all

Call your cable company and cancel your service, because you don't need it.

The only thing you need to get your own (free) cable and phone is an Internet Service Provider.

Make sure you have an unlimited Internet plan or a plan that gives you around 300GB of data over 10mpbs (most providers go up to 15mpbs or more, and 3 is the minimum. You'll need 10mpbs to keep your videos streaming smoothly). TekSavvy offers a 300GB plan for $24.99/month if you're in Canada.

Getting Free Cable

All the steps you'll need to know to get free cable

1. Go to Boxee or another similar service and download the software on your computer
2. Set up your Boxee account with preferences for Movies, TV, connected apps (like netflix) etc.
3. You will need to connect your computer to your TV at this point. Here are the necessary chords:
Connect your PC to your TV
Connect your MAC to your TV

Hook up your free phone

Make calls using the InternetYou have several options here. You can use a Magic Jack for voice over Internet protocol (also called VIP). Magic Jack is $19.95 per year and you get to pick your phone number and area code. You can also get a 1-800 number. VIP with Magic Jack is very reliable and clear. Your computer must always be on and connected to the Internet in order for you to make and receive phone calls.

If you'd rather go with the FREE option, check out the multitude of free phone (and texting) applications and software:
1. SMS for free lets you text from your computer, and Telephone lets you call any phone number from your Mac
2. Try out Oovoo, which gives you free video chat and conferencing, and it's cousin Skype, which will let you call any phone from your computer.
3. You can also try out iCall, a service that lets you make and receive free phone calls.

When I moved into my new Condo, they required that I have a local landline so the building's gatehouse could contact me whenever I had visitors. The cable company was going to charge me $40/month for phone service, and I thought that was an awful waste of money for a phone I'd barely ever use. So I got a Magic Jack instead.

I've found it to be so reliable and clear that I frequently use it instead of my cell phone. It's super easy to use, you plug it in, and it just goes. It always works, and my favorite feature is that it emails you your voicemails--so I can check them from anywhere, anytime. Even better, it saved me $40/month.
