A trip to the beach can be the highlight of one's summer. Children are especially captivated by the sand, water and beautiful scenery.

When it's time to go home, they may not want to leave. And for that matter, you might wish you could stay, too!

A trip to the beach is sure to create some lasting memories. The feel of the sand between your toes, the smell of the ocean and the warm beach sunshine are things that must be experienced to be appreciated.

What better way to continue the enjoyment than with some Beach Crafts

Making a Takeaway Beach

Beach CraftsMoving to the beach might not be an option. But you can take a little piece of the beach with you when you go home. Collecting seashells, driftwood and other beach findings is a fun way to commemorate your vacation. And when you get home, these items can be used to make your very own beach%u2026 inside of a jar. Here's how to make this simple yet meaningful craft project.

Supplies

* Glass jar with lid
* Glass cleaner
* Paint pen
* Sand
* Seashells
* Pebbles
* Small bits of driftwood
* Pieces of sea glass
* Craft glue

How to Make Your Takeaway Beach

Beach CraftsLet's move on now to look at how you go about making your own Takeaway Beach:

Instructions

1. Remove any labels from the jar and wash thoroughly. If part of a label is particularly stubborn, try using a scraper blade and/or rubbing alcohol to remove it.

2. Use glass cleaner to remove fingerprints and any remaining glue from the jar.

3. Use the paint pen to paint the name of the beach you visited on the side of the jar, near the bottom. Add some beach-inspired designs such as starfish, palm trees or ocean waves if you like.

4. Pour some sand into the jar. The amount is up to you, but try not to add so much that it overpowers the other items you will be adding.

5. Drop lots of seashells, pebbles, driftwood and sea glass into the jar. You can fill it up to the top or leave some empty space.

6. Pick out some favorite shells and sea glass to adorn the outside of your takeaway beach. Arrange them to your liking on the lid, glue on with craft glue and let dry. If you like, you could also glue some pieces of sea glass onto the jar itself.

7. Place the lid on the jar.

Your "beach in a jar" can serve a number of purposes. You could give it as a gift to someone who wasn't able to go with you. You could use it as a paperweight. If you used a large jar, it could double as a doorstop. Or you could simply place it on a shelf somewhere that you will see it each and every day.

Trinkets from the beach souvenir shop are nice. But something that holds memories of your unique experience at the beach is far more nostalgic. Your takeaway beach will remind you of the fun you had for many years to come.

How About Making A Beachwood Photo Holder?

Beach CraftsOnce your time at the beach is over, photos can bring those sensations back quickly. So how about getting the kids involved in a Beach Craft that can keep those memories alive a little more?

Many beachgoers file their pictures away in a shoebox or photo album somewhere and forget about them. Some place them in cheap frames or pin them up on a bulletin board to enjoy every day. But don't your treasured beach photos deserve better than that? This beachwood photo holder will do them justice while serving as a nice decorative touch for any room.

To get started, you'll need a large piece of driftwood found on the beach. It should be fairly flat and have plenty of character. The other supplies you'll need include:

* Tacky glue
* Wooden clothespins
* Scrub brush
* Shells, starfish and other beach findings
* Drill
* Piece of strong twine, around a foot long

Making Your Beachwood Photo Holder

Beach CraftsSo how do you go about making your Beachwood Photo Holder>

Instructions

1. Clean your driftwood with the scrub brush. Try to remove all debris while maintaining the original look of the wood.

2. Glue clothespins to the driftwood a few inches apart. Be sure to leave enough room for your photos. Gluing the clothespins at various angles adds a casual and whimsical touch.

3. Arrange embellishments such as seashells, starfish and beach glass as you like on the driftwood. Glue and let dry.

4. With a pencil, lightly mark the horizontal center of the photo holder about a half inch from the top. Then measure and mark 4 inches to the right of the center and 4 inches to the left of the center.

5. Drill holes in the last two spots you marked. Tie one end of the twine through each hole to make a hanger.

Tips

* If you used a heavy piece of wood, you may need something stronger than twine to hold it up. Try straightening out a wire coat hanger, bending it in the middle and hooking it through the holes.

* If you want to preserve the rustic look of the driftwood, it's best to leave it unpainted. But if you want to make it match your décor, add a coat of paint in a muted color.

* Artistic types could paint a beach scene on the photo holder before adding clothespins and other embellishments. Use your photos for inspiration.

* If you prefer a collage, omit the clothespins. Cut your photos into various shapes and stick them to the driftwood with Mod Podge. Let dry, then cover with another coat of Mod Podge before adding three-dimensional embellishments.

Down by the Sea - Craft for Kids

For families who travel to the beach, it's not unusual to come home with a bucket full of shells or other found items from the trip. The problem becomes what to do with all those shells. Here are two "down by the sea" crafts for kids to be able to keep their treasures and give them some function.

Sea shell paper weights

Help your children make sea shell paper weights. This will enable them to keep the shells and make something which can be kept out in view. You'll need the following items:

* Found shells or other items from your trip
* White tacky craft glue
* Sand
* Paint (optional)
* Plastic tubes (similar to Wilson tennis ball containers or some potato chip containers)
* Plaster of Paris
* Fun foam
* Clear gloss spray paint

Begin by making a base for the paperweight. Parents can cut the bottom from the plastic containers. Then cut down about another inch, leaving two or three tabs sticking up. This will be the mold for the base for the paperweight and can be reused.

Parents will want to follow the instructions on the plaster of Paris and mix it according to those instructions. Pour the plaster into the base and allow it to dry thoroughly. When it is dry, turn it upside down and tap it onto a table. This should cause the base to fall out.

While you're waiting for bases to dry, you'll want to cut a three-inch circle from the fun foam for each base you make. These will be glued to the plaster base using tacky craft glue.

Paint the plaster base and allow it to dry unless you're using water color; water color paint won't require drying time. You can go to the next step which is mixing craft glue with sand to make it moist. The base will have an impression; fill the impression with the glue and sand mixture, making a mound.

Press several sea shells into the sand. When the sand has dried, you can spray the paperweight with clear gloss spray paint to keep the sand from coming off.

Seascape

For something less time consuming, you can create a seascape using a glass fish bowl. You'll need the following items:

* Glass fish bowl
* Photos of the day you spent at the beach
* Clear tape
* Sand from the beach
* Treasures found at the beach (shells, sea glass, driftwood, etc.)
* Wooden skewers
* Nautical pictures or stickers

Begin by carefully taping a photo of your family at the beach onto the inside of the fish bowl. Be sure to tape along the edges to keep sand from getting behind the photo. Then pour enough beach sand (or play sand) into the fish bowl to fill it about halfway full or until it covers the bottom of the picture.

When the sand is arranged the way you want it, start adding the sea shells or other items collected on the trip. Using stickers or images cut from magazines, tape the images on a wooden skewer and then trim them so the images will rest on the sand when pushed in.

There are many other ways your children can use their treasures from "down by the sea" to create crafts, but you may want to start with these two ideas. The point is to allow the children to enjoy the items they found and make them functional so they can see them and remember the fun of the day.

Do You and Your Kids Enjoy Beach Crafts In The Summer?

  • KathyMcGraw Feb 26, 2012 @ 5:05 pm | delete
    You have some pretty cool ideas for beach crafts. My kids did the beach in a jar with sand from Hawaii and they loved it.
  • Ramkitten Feb 26, 2012 @ 12:24 pm | delete
    I love this. And it makes me think about a special collage I have here in the house. I made the collage with my dad when I was seven, on a trip we took together to Florida (my mom had to work, so it was just the two of us). We went beachcombing and collected all sorts of beautiful shells, sponges, stones and sea glass. Then we selected our favorite pieces of beach treasures and made the collage. I still have it more than 30 years later, and it's hanging on my bedroom wall. I treasure the memories it holds from that trip, especially now that my dad isn't with us anymore.

    Really great ideas, just got home from a week at the beach with my kids and now it's time to make our memory books.

    These ideas are great. I love the idea of the fish bowl filled with a photo of the family at the beach, and items gathered at the beach. I'm lensrolling this to my "Celebrate Summer" lens.
