How is Beach Glass Created?
Castaways become treasured finds
Time and water wave action upon the glass, or pieces of pottery, created the rounded, frosted gems we call beach glass.

There is no such thing as officially certified sea glass, and the buyer must rely on the reputation of the seller or their knowledge of beach glass characteristics.
Sea Glass
is another name by which beach glass is known.
Finding Beach Glass
You might find a gem!

Follow the wrack line, which is the line of debris left by the last high tide or storm, as you walk along the shoreline. Pay close attention to places where small shells and pebbles accumulate. Look in the pockets of stones. Especially search during bright days when the gleam of sunlight can reflect off of the glass shards.
Have you found a beach with several pieces of glass? Are there various colors of glass? You may have hit the motherlode! Comb that area.
Do you know what to look for?
Well worn bits of glass or pottery, even the larger pieces of bottles qualify as long as they are wave washed.

Beach and Sea Glass
Little bits of trivia washed up on the seafoam
Glass from inland waterways such as Chesapeake Bay and the Great Lakes is known as beach glass, and "sea glass" formed by the wave action of the ocean, which is both stronger and saline, creates a somewhat different look. Sea glass is much more weathered than the beach glass of inland waters.
There are numerous colors of these beach gems, and some are more rare than others, but all are becoming harder to come by.
According to one source, "Purple sea glass is very uncommon, as is citron, opaque white, cobalt and cornflower blue."

The wrack zone is part of the shore just above the mean high tide line where kelp is deposited on the sand. This is where you can find sea glass.

- REAL beachglass is made when lightning strikes the beach superheating the sand therefore making glass. Which is why its so sought after a prize. Otherwise the beach glass from bottles is normally quite easy to find if you know where to look

- It is amusing what the waves make out of trivial pieces of colored pieces of glass... I use to pick them up om Cal Nay NJ, but didn't cress my mind to make jewelry from them... Thanks for a great lens.
