Let's Go!

I like to go to the beach, but I also like to visit small towns and villages.
No links to the obvious travel sites on this lens. I figure you already know how to find those anyway.

I use this Squidoo page to follow flights (using Flight Aware) and find out what the seating assignments will be like on my next flight (using Seat Guru).

I've tried to find the more unusual places, like the giant ball of twine, the Very Large Array, and other oddities.

Flight Aware

Track flights in real time

This site gives you relatively real time information about the airplanes in the air right now. (actually, there's a six-minute delay) Find out where the flight is, its altitude, expected landing time, and its flight path. I've used it to track incoming flights. I also look at it after one of my flights to see what our flight path was.

Seat Guru

Find out the pro's and con's about your seat before you fly

Seat Guru gives you seating plans for all major airlines and their specific equipment. It gives tips on which seats to avoid (because the seat backs don't recline, or because that window seat they sold you doesn't really have a window). So, if you happen to know that your Continental Airlines flight will be on a 737-300, you would know that seats 7A and 7F, although shown as window seats, do not actually have a window.

Maps

TopoZone
Find sand dunes, cemeteries, shipwrecks, piers, jetties, ferries, airstrips, and more.
Sky Vector
Navigational Charts and Maps
These are great for armchair pilots.
Maps Live
Okay, I LOVE Google earth.
But this Maps Live is much more current.
The scrolling and zooming is easy.
Nautical Charts
Nautical charts that show you where there are shipwrecks, channels, oil rigs and jetties. This particular link goes to one of the Gulf of Mexico nautical chart from Galveston to the Rio Grande.
Enviro Mapper
Okay, this one is a slow-mover, but it does show some good information. You can find businesses with hazardous waste (as a normal part of their operations, such as a dry cleaners), and also shows where there are discharges into the air or the water.

Gotta see the Big Ball of Twine

It's in Minnesota.
Here's a quote from the Roadside America website:

"The gazebo that shelters it today allows viewing from all sides through Plexiglas panels, but you have to crouch close to a vent for a good whif."

Road Side America - Twine Ball

World's Largest Twine Ball

It's a Ball of String, Not Twine!

So says the headline of this article.
This giant ball of string is in Missouri.

Historic Transmission Lines

Okay, it's not really the transmission lines that are historic, it's what they're about to take out that has historic value.
