Creating Beaded Fashion Accessories

Beautiful beaded fashion accessories including handbags, purses, necklaces, belts and bracelets were created by men, women and children in the 1920's as a popular past-time. Bead pattern books for these superbly crafted items were published by popular beading craftsmen of the period to satisfy the incredible demand by those wanting to make their own bead projects.

Typical examples of these lovely 1920's beaded creations are shown in photos below. Even today these bead designs are popular and eye-catching and make great bead projects for both adults and children.

Stunning Beaded Bag Patterns from the 1920's

Beautiful Beaded Handbags and Purses

Apart from beaded dresses or lampshades, a beaded handbag or purse was probably one of the larger popular beading projects of the 1920's. Every lady wanted a stylish beaded handbag as a fashion accessory and many were prepared to make their own. Beautiful bags with stunning designs and patterns were created with loving care and attention.

The beautiful knitted and beaded bag on the right is called "The Egyptian" and suggests the splendors of old Egypt in its design and coloring. The pattern for this bag and many other designs are contained in the downloadable "New Bead Book".

Alternatively, we have combined the "New Bead Book" with 3 other leading 1920's beading books to form "1920's Beadwork". Two of these books are solely concerned with creating beaded handbags - between them they contain over 30 bag patterns.

Beaded Bracelets and Necklaces

The trendy young ladies of the 1920's were known as "Flappers" and one of their defining characteristics was a long chain of beads that they twirled while they danced the charleston.

One of the first beading projects a young girl was introduced to was making bracelets and necklaces. Eighty years later young girls are once again making their own beaded bracelets.

Patterns for making bracelets, necklaces, neckbands, headbands, watch bands, buckles, and rings are all found in the New Bead Book. Some more examples of beaded bracelets are shown in a photo below.

Beaded Bracelet or Ring

Making a beaded necklace, bracelet, ring, or headband like the examples on the right was considered a great activity for children on a stormy winters day when they were stuck indoors.

Making a beaded necklace or bracelet helped children to gain the skills necessary to create larger and more detailed fashion accessories like lampshades and handbags.

These small items are a great introduction to the art of beading. Producing the finished article is a source of great satisfaction and an incentive to move on to a more challenging beading project.

For a range of 38 genuine 1920's beading projects that suit beginners through to advanced crafters, check out the New Bead Book
