Create Trendy Pendant Necklaces Using Bails

Create Easy Trendy Pendant Necklaces Using Bails

When you are in the learning process of beginning beading, there is so much to learn and sometimes it can be overwhelming.

But if you break it down, start with just the basics and build from there then you have set the ground work to explore in more depth once you are more comfortable with the different elements in jewelry making.

For this page, we will focus on one simple and easy to use finding called a bail.

Findings are very necessary components to creating most any kind of beaded jewelry.

Findings are what holds your jewelry together and findings can also be incorporated as part of your design.

Depending on the particular finding used in your piece, that finding can become the focal point.

That is how bails are used.

By using this one component, bails give you many choices to creating the focal point of any piece by creating a pendent from an ordinary bead.

I'll keep it simple with no fluff.

We will talk about the uses and any beading tools that you may need to apply bails.

By the end of the page you will have a better understanding and better idea of some of the additional findings you may want to keep on hand; bails.

If this already seems overwhelming to you, hang in there with me, work your way down the page and it will all start to come together.

For your convenience, I have created an 'all in one' page that discusses the very basics to beading. You can find it by following this link. I share with you an overview.

If you would also like to see how many different categories that are classified as 'beading' then check out my page on 'Discover Beading Basics'.

Or if you would like other information on basics to beading then be sure to check out my other pages I've written on this very topic.

P.S. Just a note of interest to me, I discovered while creating this page that pendent or pendant is spelled with both an 'a' and 'e', so don't be surprised if you find both spellings throughout the page.

Basic Bead Findings

Introduction of Basics

basic findingsIn another page I have covered information on 'bead findings for beginners' . I cover in detail with pictures some of the introductory findings that I recommend.

Here is a recap of the list:
crimps
beadwire
clasp
ear wires

As you learn new findings you will find your list growing of what you consider basic findings and will learn more of what your basic necessities will consist of.

I encourage you to visit this page and read my suggestions, but for now let's move on to more basic findings.

Half of the struggle is discovering most of these findings and visualizing their use.

As you learn more about findings and how they are used you will find that your list will grow also.

Above I mentioned a small list of what I would consider the very introduction basic beading findings but now I want to increase by one.

I'd like to introduce you to;

Bails

This is an easy bead finding to use that takes little effort to create but makes a huge statement.

I hope you find this helpful and if so let me know before you leave. I love getting feedback from those that visit.

Let's explore more.....

What Are Bails?

Bails Are Jewelry Findings

As mentioned above, bails are a bead finding.

Bails are a metal component that are used to create quick and easy pendents.

Listed here are five common bails that will make you look like a professional every time.

Donut Bail
Ice Pick Bail
Glue-on Bail
Brooch Converter Bail
Bead Bail

You only need use a pair of rubber tip pliers or glue or no tools at all as you will see. For now let's look at each of these bails listed here in more detail.

Donut Bail

Sterling Silver Triple Heart Loop Bail

Amazon Price: (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

The donut bail is a simple bail to use for a large statement.

It is called a donut bail because it is used with a donut bead.

By simply opening the bail, sliding the donut bead onto the bail and reclosing matching the holes at top..'poof'..you just created a pendent.

All you need to do now is string this onto a chain of your choice and your project is complete.

Donut Beads

Black Agate Donut Bead 25mm

Amazon Price: $2.25 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

These beautiful big donut beads are what you need to complete the pendent using the donut bail.

Ice Pick or Pinch Bail

Beadalon Pinch Bail Pendent 9mm Nickel Free Silver Plated, 6-Piece

Amazon Price: $5.72 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

This 'pinch' or 'ice pick' bail is the same ease of use. Simply open the prong area, slide into the top hole bead, clamp the prongs together and you are done.

If you wish you may add a dab of glue to hold the prong secure and prevent slippage but that is a personal choice.

Teardrop Bead

Swarovski Crystal #6010 17 x 8.5mm Briolette Bead Fuchsia (1)

Amazon Price: $3.99 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

The 'pinch' or 'ice pick' bail is designed to be used with a teardrop bead with the hole at the top.

This bead is 11mm tall and will make a nice simple elegant statement for any occasion.

Glue On Bail

Silver Plated Circular Bail 16 mm (12 pcs)

Amazon Price: $8.99 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

The glue on bail needs a little more attention. You must use an industrial strength glue to hold the stone or component to the flat bail. You must also make sure that the bead or item that is being glued has a flat enough area to rest well on the bail.

These bails are still just as easy to use and still offers so many variety of choices to creating pendents.

Flat Back Beads

Swarovski Crystal Flatback Rhinestone #2058 Enhanced ss40 'Black Diamond' x8

Amazon Price: $3.25 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

When using the glue on bails these crystal flat back beads are just the ticket. Be careful to match bead sizes correctly to your bail size. Your bail can be smaller than your bead just make sure that they are comparable. Inquire with the supplier for more specifics if necessary but please pay close attention to this smallest detail. It will make you happier to complete your project right away rather than wait for exchanges.

Bail Brooch

Amazon Price: $2.99 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

The brooch bail converts brooches/pins to pendents. There are two directions available, horizontal hole or vertical. This is the horizontal shown here.

By simply opening the pin back and sliding it into the alloted slot, closing the pin closure it magically changes your pin now to a pendent.

No glue, no tools. Just this simple bail component.

Bead Bail

The bead bail is another simple bail that requires no tools. Simply unscrew the ball at the end of the bail rod add the number of beads to fill the rod and reattach the ball. No glue, no tools required to create this simple pendent.

Large Hole Beads

'Pandora' like beads

SS Jet Crystal Pave Bead: 12x8mm 4.7mm Hole For European 31295

Amazon Price: (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

With the bead bail you must use large hole beads to fit the rod of the bail. These 'pandora' like beads work well and depending the length of the bail rod will depend the number of beads you will be using.

Bail Pliers

Simple yet useful

Double Nylon Jaw Flat Nose Pliers

Amazon Price: $9.60 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

To attach some of these bails that don't require glue you may want to consider investing in a pair of nylon nosed pliers. These have rubber tips and prevent any scratching to your components.

These are handy to have for more uses than closing bails.
