Beadmaking - Beadmaking Tools and Beads
Beadmaking Tools are sometimes confusing ...
There are a few absolutely essential tools and literally hundrds of others to tempt you with !
Making your own bead jewelry is a fascinating and fun way to make jewelry either for your self or as gifts for friends or relatives.
The tools needed range from a simple pair of pliers up to complete toolkits costing 100$ !
Beadmaking is a very old craft going back to Egyptian times and earlier .
The basic principles of making jewelry are below together with a list of absolute essentials.
The latest technique in Jewelry making is the use of PMC (precious metal clay) which you can use to make rings, findings, earrings, pendants and even small sculptures and brooches.
You'll find that after making a few necklaces or bracelets you may suddenly run out of ideas - fortunately there are numerous books to help you with patterns or designs.
A word about Pliers
I also like getting new tools.
A problem has become apparent with all the pliers I bought - well two problems in fact - one is VERY sharp corners on the outside edges and the rubber hadles slip exosing a razor-sharp spring.
You can file the corners down so that's not such a problem but the spring that either pushes the points aprat or holds them together is an essential part of the pliers.
You should really do this BEFORE the problem arises or you'll have to reset the springs so that they interlink before using the additional tape.
To get around it just get some builders Duct tape and wrap it around the rubber at the points end overlapping on to the exposed metal between the grip and the points. That should do the trick. However with a pair you use regularly the rubbers will fray and you might like to extend the duct tape over all the rubber. Make sure the tape is flat and rub it down or you will get callouses after a while. Its better than buying a new pair ! (of course it doesn't solve the problem of losing them ...)

What sticks Jewelry together !
Findings are the metal or other materials that you build Jewelry with - be warned you can quickly spend a lot on findings.
Its realy important if you are making Jewelry for sale to only use Silver findings - preferably Sterling Silver - do not use Nickel - a large number of ladies are allergic to it.
Essentials ar clasps,ear-ring findings and crimp beads (don't worry - I explain how to use these on my beginners beading lens !
Fetching new data from eBay now... please stand byMake Earrings and sell them !
Easiest way to start making and selling jewellery
1 pair needle nosed pliers
Heavy Duty Nail clippers
Very fine emery cloth or sandpaper
Or a tiny file (to take off edges at ends of wire)
Silver fish hook findings (see ebay to buy them cheap) They are cheaper in bulk.
silver wire (24 gauge)
Beads
Make sure the ear ring finding don't contain NICKEL as many people are allergic to nickel. Silver plated ones are ok. Gold plated ones cost more but look great.
Cut 2 pieces of wire 3 inches in length.
Bend about 1 and 1/2 inches along to 90 degrees.
Slip on fishook (there's a small hole at the bottom)
Fold sticking out piece over finding and wrap it around the main stem 2 or 3 times - keep it looking neat. snip off bits that stick out. sand over with very fine sandpaper.
Turn earring upside down and slip on your choice of beads (important ! Make sure you have 2 of each bead - one for each ear ring !)
When you are happy then grasp the finding above the beads and wrap the wire over one of the points of the pliers to make a tiny loop near the beads (this will be at the bottom when the ear ring is the tight way up.)
Snip off excess wire with heavy duty nail clippers (cheaper than side cutters !)
Now do it all again.
Congratulations you have made a great pair of ear rings !
Try the following to sell well :
Jade chips
Pearls
Swarovski beads
Amethyst chips
Semi-precious chips come in strings and are a cheap way to buy beads.
Package ear rings in a box from a stationers store
(Or a ziploc polythene bag if it's to friends !)
You can sell creative ear rings for between $10 and $20 a pair
NEVER say they are home-made - it sounds tacky and unprofessional.
Always call them HAND-MADE !.
Presentation of your product is the main thing - the better the box,the faster they sell.
To display at a craft show use a piece of dark coloured velvet as a background to make them look luxurious.
I always make 4 or 5 pairs at the same time and line up the beads in order in rows for each ear ring.
Ear-rings are one of the most profitable items to make and sell. Always present them well and give them in an organza or similar bag or a small box.
Lampwork Beads on eBay
Jazz up your beads !
Lampwork beads range from fairly simple designs on beads costing pennies up to artisan produced designs of exceptional beauty (and cost !)
Like most things - the more you buy the cheaper they get.
Put some of these on your jewelry and watch your sales soar.
