How to Be a Gas Saver!

Some of us are very good at being able to tolerate pain. Pain at the pump might be a different story.
It isn't just the pump price that hurts; it is how that is effecting our other prices. Those other prices include grocery, drug-stores, long-distance mailing, vacations, airlines and shopping in general. We cannot look to others to solve the problem quickly; so Americans are demonstrating their ingenuity in solving their problems on their own.

Learn About Saving Gas with Route Planning

Learning about saving gas is much like any other learning experience. One great way to learn about anything is to check and see what people or organizations are doing the best job on what you want to learn. When it comes to saving gas with route planning, the best example is probably found at UPS-United Parcel Services.

Much of people's driving relies on the habits and routines formed during our driving experience. A driver routinely takes the same route to their destination that they have "always" taken without putting a great deal of thought into the possibility of alternatives. It gets us to the post office, the mall, the restaurant, and the grandparents house so it's good right? The point here is, that it is even better with route planning because we save gas and money.

The United Parcel Service has shared that while studying down time on their routes, they noted that a fair amount of time was spent with their units idling in left turn lanes. They spent some time evaluating the situation and here's what they have learned about saving gas. By doing route planning to maximize right turns and to eliminate time spent stopped for left turns, UPS is saving three million gallons of gasoline a year.

It is clear that route planning really comes into it's own when coupled with trip consolidation. If one uses their car to visit multiple destinations on planned one-day trip in order to save gas, route planning can multiply the gas savings. It can even save to plan how to park. If the vehicle is parked in a centralized location at a shopping plaza, one can then walk to several destinations within the plaza without moving the car and thus saving gas.
By taking the time to plan the most direct route and limiting your vehicles idle time, you will learn about saving gas from the masters of savings at UPS.

DRIVE for FUEL EFFICIENCY!

Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower your gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds and by 5% around town.
1. Drive the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.
2. Accelerate slowly.
3. Try not to idle your engine. In most cases, it takes less gas to restart the car than to let it idle for more than 2 minutes.
4. Use cruise control on highways. Cruise control helps you maintain a constant speed and will usually save you money.

I can't agree more about route planning to help save gas. The beauty is that it also saves me time because I end up really thinking about the places I need to go. Sometimes I realize that something I need is available at a location that is closer than where I had first thought about going.

We are right on when you say we all need to learn about saving gas because it saves us money at the same time.
