Beagle Dog Training - Tips for Training Beagle Dogs

Are you in need of effective beagle dog training techniques? A well trained and obedient beagle will definitely make your life much easier.

Having these loveable, energetic and inquisitive pooches can be very rewarding. At the same time when you choose to have a beagle as your companion it can very quickly become quite a challenge if they're not following your instructions.

I would like to share with you on this page some useful beagle dog training tips and techniques that actually work and you can start using today!

Tips for Training Beagles

Tip #1 - Start With The Basics

Beagle Dog Training - The BasicsBefore training Beagles, you must understand that they are scent hunters and are easily distracted. Beagles are very intelligent creatures who naturally will follow their instincts, making training this breed that much more challenging.

That's why its probably a good idea to start with the basics, a solid Sit/Stay technique will do the trick. Once you accomplish this you can have your Beagle "Sit/Stay" before you open the door and can keep it under your control.

Most members of the hound group will take a lot of patience and training to get good obedience (and that may just be the understatement of the year).

Tip #2 - Keep Them On a Leash

Unlike other dogs, Beagles acute sense of smell means that they will always follow their noses until the next state, province or even territory if you give them a chance.

For this reason you should never really let your Beagle off the leash unless you are in a fenced off and secure area. Or if you feel like going for a run :)

Tip #3 - The "Now" Command...

Pick a really special treat that you would not normally give to your Beagle on any occasion. You then start by giving the treat when your Beagle is right next to you and saying the command "NOW".

You then start to say the command when your Beagle is further and further away, as well as when you are both outside.

Eventually, your Beagle will start to associate NOW with the most delicious and yummiest treats in the world. By doing this no matter what situation you are in, you beagle will always want to come right back to you.

Tip #4 - Become a Team

Probably one of the most important aspects about training beagle dogs is that you must be willing to work as a team. You and your Beagle must work together if you want to see any kind of success.

When you can see that you are both working towards a common goal, things can go a much quicker and smoother. Allow your Beagle to learn to play by having fun with you. Show them love and affection and make sure you show them that you care for them.

If your beagle knows they're in a well-loved pack with someone that cares about them, they will be more willing and motivated to listen to you and your commands.

Tip #5 - Have Patience

Because beagles are so playful, loving and energetic, the process of training them can sometimes become quite challenging.

It's important to remember that with patience and consistent techniques, you will ultimately be able to have a very obedient beagle which will not be jumping all over your bed with its muddy paws.

I won't lie to you, the first few weeks of your beagle training journey will be quite the challenge, but remember - keep at it, keep motivated, ultimately practice WILL make perfect.

What wonderful information (and enjoyed the humor too!) My dog is actually part Beagle, part Yorkie but acts like a Beagle. Love him to death but he does try my patience at times.

Oh how I know the feeling. My beagle definitely takes it out of me, but patience is a virtue right? :)

I don't have a beagle (or any dog, actually) but I just finished reading a fun free Kindle book called "Fixing Freddie" about a woman and her wayward beagle. Cute lens and great suggestions; particularly Tip #2. Our neighbor had an adorable little beagle named "Abby" who never ever stayed at home but followed her nose all over the place. Sadly, she disappeared on a jaunt and never came back.

I have a beagle named Jake and wow - he is very naughty. I don't think there is anyone who has enough patience for these dogs and what they do. On the positive side, he is sweet, loving, loyal and clearly loves his human family. He is very smart & is the only dog I know that sneezes (begs) for treats. He learned how to sneeze as a trick a lot faster than he learned how to go potty outside. Naughty and all, I love my beagle Jake : )

I have my Beagle (Rafa) for about 5 years now, he is still learning the command "come". what a nose.
I have my trained to go about his business in the yard and always at the same place, it is much easier to keep clean. took me 5 tries.
He follows most of the commands, a good one to learn is the "stay" I let him free in the woods and fields near my house.
I am now training him for the "come" command it is not easy, but will managed I still have few more year to try.
