Beagle and Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) Mix

Almost a year ago, my daughter walked in to our "No Pets" apartment in Florida carrying a puppy. She announced that the small litter had been thrown out of their home by an abusive owner and left to die. He was 5 weeks old.

He was tiny, fitting in the palms of my hands. With tears in her eyes, my daughter asked if we could keep him.

I looked at my husband and knew his thoughts were mine. We were both thinking about our no pets apartment policy, a pending move, all three of us at work or school for most of the day, and our sketchy finances. This was not the time for us to become pet owners -- especially to a very needy 5 week old, un-housebroken puppy.

One look in his eyes and I knew we were done for.

Meet Jordan

Smaller than a shoe

Our Borkie - Jordan

My daughter has always loved sports -- especially basketball. Since the puppy was the runt of the litter, she decided to give him a big name to aspire too -- Meet Jordan (yes... as in Michael).

He fell asleep on a blanket and we were remarking how small he was. I set my size 7 flip flop next to him and snapped this photo. I couldn't believe my shoe was bigger than him!

Borkie

A Borkie is a dog that is 1/2 Beagle and 1/2 Yorkshire Terrier. They are usually black or gray in color with tan markings. Their hair/fur is more like a Yorkie but have the ears, feet and torso of a Beagle.

Getting Set Up for the New Puppy

Borkies are Small Puppies

Since Jordan was only 5 weeks old, a quick call to the local animal shelter told us we needed formula, droppers, bottles, and a bed he could feel secure in. Solid food was too much for him just yet.

We picked up what we needed and fed him immediately. We had to use the dropper for the first few days. Then we introduced the bottle and he caught on quickly.

We all laughed when we brought home the smallest pet bed we could find and set him in it. He didn't weigh enough to squish the foam batting in the middle of the bed so, he kept rolling to the edge. He decided not to fight it and conked out in the seam of the wall and bottom of the pet bed.

That's a yellow duck finger puppet in the bed with him.

The Move

Florida to Indiana

3 weeks later, (June) we were on the road with our move. My husband and I were driving our car the 1,000 mile trip with Jordan. My daughter stayed behind to spend the summer with my brother in Florida, so the three of us took off one morning on our journey.

Jordan rode inside his dog bed sitting on one of our laps during the whole trip. He slept most of the time and was not really much trouble at all. We stopped at rest areas so he could run around, stretch his little legs and do his business. We had an ice chest and picnic hamper packed with food for meals. Neither of us wanted to leave him in the car while we ate. The June heat was unbearable in a closed up, parked vehicle.

As a matter of fact, sometimes the sun would be shining in the window and he would wake up because he was hot. He soon figured out that vents on the dashboard blew out cold air. This became his new favorite way to ride...

Paws on either side of the vent, head down, cool air blowing!

A Borkie usually has a very sweet demeanor. They follow wherever you go and really love to cuddle!

Jordan Doubled in Size

Borkie Jordan 12 WeeksBy 12 Weeks, Jordan went to the County clinic for shots and a check up. He weighed 5.4 pounds at the check up and was deemed healthy. He had already doubled in size! I couldn't believe it!

His little personality was really starting to develop. He loved toys! He would throw them and chase them, growling and playing. He knew when we picked up the leash it was time for a walk. He loved being outside.

We also found out he had a huge penchant for chewing -- anything! Toys, blankets, furniture, socks, rugs, paper -- anything near him was up for grabs.

Puppy Growing Up

Jordan the Borkie

Jordan and his Housemates

A Borkie, A Dachshund and a Shih tzu

Lucy, Jordan and LucyWe live with my parents now and they are HUGE dog people. They already had two dogs but welcomed Jordan with open arms.

Jordan's playmate is a 2 year old Shih tzu named Lucy. Mom and dad took Lucy in when her owner moved to a home that didn't allow pets. She is adorable, lovable and a great playmate for Jordan.

The matriarch of the group is a Dachshund also named Lucy (yes... this is a bit confusing sometimes.)

Old Lucy has been in the family for 11 years and has earned a right to her own page, I Love Lucy Dog. She is blind and deaf now but her nose still works very well. If the two youngsters get too rambunctious, old Lucy let's them know who's the boss. She is a hoot!

Borkies do like to bark and will howl like a Beagle sometimes. Jordan almost talks -- whines -- when he spots a squirrel or goose in the yard. They are also very smart and trainable.

A Borkie Grows Up

Jordan, Borkie Today

Jordan is fast approaching his first birthday. It has been a big year for him in so many ways. He now weighs about 20 pounds -- a far cry from the 2.5 pounds when we first got him.

He is happy, healthy and an all around fun little guy. He loves to snuggle whether in a chair or in bed at night. We still have a problem with the "chewing/eating of everything" -- it's most apparent after he "does his business" in the yard -- but we are working on it.

He is very loving and almost cries when we come home from work or a day out running errands. He's just so happy to see us again.

I love this little guy so much. It really is hard to imagine what life was like without him even though it's been less than a year. My daughter swears he's going to college with her but I don't think the Dorm Director is aware of this plan. I think he'll be stuck with Tim and I and he'll love it when she comes home to visit!

Stopping back by this special lens to see how Jordan is doing. He's one lucky dog to have found a place in your family. He's a Purple Star Puppy for sure!

Wow! That looks like my dog. We are pretty sure his mom is a beagle, but the dad has to either be a cavalier spaniel or a yorkie. I think it's yorkie and you story only reinforces that. How does he shed?
  • DecoratingforEvents Mar 15, 2012 @ 9:15 am | delete
He does shed a bit. He loves to be combed/brushed though so we do that while watching tv and that helps a lot.

I love all dogs, but I prefer small ones because they are easier to walk. I have three grand dogs and they are such a light in my life. It looks like you have a really charming and winning dog in Jordan - what a great story.
