Beagle Origins

Beagles are thought to originate from the Talbot Hound, a dog brought to Great Britain by William the Conqueror in the eleventh century. Beagles are also thought to have originated from the Kerry Beagles from Ireland. These dogs are generally used for hunting and the sport was known as a poor person's foxhunting because people follow the dogs on foot and not on horses. Beagles are primarily used to hunt rabbits, since they have a strong ability to pick up the scents of rabbits.

Good Natured Dogs:

Beagles are known for their sweet, gentle disposition and good tempers. They are generally intelligent, but tend to be stubborn and may be hard to train. They are extremely playful and energetic and enjoy long walks and running. They love tracking after a scent they took a whiff on. Highly curious, these dogs follow the scent until they get to it. They might also get distracted from the walks because of the smell!

A beagle is a medium sized dog with a similar appearance to a foxhound but with shorter and smaller legs and longer ears. They are known for their strong sense of smell and are used primarily for hunting games, bears and deer. The cartoon character is correct when portraying Snoopy as loyal, since this breed is generally known for its being loyal to its owner and being good natured and well tempered. Because of their hunting abilities, beagles are generally active and love to run around and exercise..

Beagles are very gentle in nature and are known to get along well with children. They also have mild separation anxieties mainly because they are pack animals and are used to having company along. This may also be a reason why they get along well with humans.

Training Beagle Puppies

Beagle puppies are often being passed off disobedient, un-trainable, hyperactive and mischievous. While that has some truth in it, life with a beagle puppy can be enjoyable, fun and downright interesting. What you need is patience, love and the right beagle training principles.

1. Get your beagle puppy to love its food

Beagles love food. However, some beagles tend to be pickier than others. In this case, try several brands of dog food, and use the one that your beagle loves. Getting your beagle puppy interested in its food is a major step in getting it trained.

2. Use elusive training props

Make your training equipment (e.g. ball, hoop, dog bone) exclusively available only during training. Your beagle puppy will look forward to its training session when it realizes that these "toys" are only available during training.

3. Start 'em young

Beagle puppies can be trained from as young as 5 weeks old. Eager to please their owners, beagle puppies are able to learn rapidly during their puppy days.

4. Be firm, but remember to praise

Don't spoil your beagle puppy. He is more likely to be obedient if it sees you as its pack leader. Letting your beagle trample all over you will you its peer in the dog's mind. However, being firm doesn't mean being lack of praise. Always praise your beagle puppy for each thing it does correctly.

5. Patience, perseverance and fun

As they are stubborn, some beagles may take several lessons or even weeks to master a trick. Patience and perseverance will help a great deal in getting your beagle puppy trained all the way. Also, as beagles love to have fun, being excited during training will help in prolonging your puppy's attention span.

6. Use the right methods

Many owners think they know better and train their beagles from a human perspective. The fact is, beagles and all dogs for that matter, learn best when they do something voluntarily. You'll be amazed how quick a beagle puppy can learn when you use the right training methods!

Beagle Puppies is a blog on raising, living, breeding and training beagles based on personal experience. Read stories, tips, watch videos and gather beagle training information from this blog.

Facts About Beagles

Made famous by the Peanuts character, Snoopy, Beagles were bred in England as trail hounds, used to hunt rabbits and hares. Beagles are scent hounds and have a tendency to ignore everything but the interesting scent when hunting. A very energetic breed of dog, Beagles are social, curious, intelligent and brave. They are also likely to get into trouble as their hound dog instinct can take over in an instant should a Beagle catch a whiff of an exciting or interesting scent.

Male Beagles will grow to an average height of 14 to 16 inches and average weight of 22 to 25 pounds; females, 13 to 15 inches and 20 to 23 pounds. On average, a Beagle will live 12 to 15 years. Most Beagles have a tri-color coat, consisting of red and white, orange and white or lemon and white. It is a short to medium length coat that requires no more than minimal care - regular brushing and bathing only when necessary.

Beagles will shed, but not excessively. They have long, wide ears and brown or hazel eyes that often times look like pleading 'puppy dog' eyes. They have a distinct, and often times, familiar baying sound that they make when hunting prey. It is this distinctive howl and ability to pick up on strange scents that make them excellent guard dogs.

Beagles are good with families and children and love to play, but care should be taken with other family pets. If a Beagle is not properly socialized early, it may try to hunt and capture the other pets; however, they do not like being left alone and may bay excessively (annoying the neighbors). Beagles do well traveling and adapt quickly and easily to new experiences, thanks to their fearless nature, but also need strong and consistent training to ensure they do not run off. Beagles will do well in almost any living environment, provided they are given plenty of opportunity to run and exercise.

A leash is a must with a Beagle, or a well fenced in yard as well as consistent obedience training. Their hunting instinct will take over when a scent comes their way and will run off in search of the prey. Ears should be checked and cleaned regularly, as Beagles are prone to painful ear infections. Beagles are also prone to heart disease, epilepsy, eye and back problems, and chondroplasia - dwarfism that results in warped front legs.

There is a website that has great information on Beagles and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:
