Sarah Palin And Animals
Please note!
The following pictures are very graphic! They show in great detail what happens when a bear is skinned and the hide is prepared for a taxidermist. Please scroll down quickly if you think you might be offended by such material.
Thank you.
Images From A Brown Bear Hunt In SE Alaska
Be warned - these photos are NOT for the squeamish!

The next morning, pictures are taken and the skinning begins. The hunter would like to keep the pelt for a rug.

The bear skull needs to be stripped of all flesh, so it can be preserved as a trophy.

The bear pelt is salted and air-dried to prepare it for shipping to a taxidermist.

So, What's Your Take On This Whole Thing?
Is there a middle ground? Are these "black & white" issues?
Should we stop all big game killing?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byNo. Hunting is a good thing. Here's why:
Bob says:
Its who we are as humans, just keep it under control. Wild pigs are out of control in the lower 48, would like to see controlled hunting there also. BTW, I do not hunt nor own a gun, but that is my personal choice. Peace out

Well said, Denise! The only thing wrong with the Sarah palin article is the deliberately slanted way it plays on the emotions of vulnerable people who do not understand the facts. Such attempts at manipulation are unworthy of the site. Margo Arrowsmith has betrayed her ignorance by saying she does not know of any meat-eating animal that is eaten by humans or dogs! Sarah Palin is an honest down to earth lady whose skills and commonsense appeal to a huge swathe of the population. I'm British and I wish we had someone of her calibre here!

I enjoy hunting, being in the woods is very calming. in the fall the morning hunt is pristine and the evening hunt is an array of colors. There are days with so much wildlife and some are so quiet.
Most hunters hunt not for the trophy but the meat. I have taken to eating everyting I shoot, except the varmits such as coyote andground squirels, grey squirels are between rabbit and chicken.
Venison is great and I prefer it now over beef, can't even think of ordering a hamburger when there is ground venison at home. Homemade sausage and jerky beats the store bought anyday
In these tight times I can forgo the meat department and I know how ist processed and ther are no hormones added to my meat!
Like they say they can't all be trophies, but they can all be dinner.
Keep on hunting

It's not even worth discussing! I have yet to meet an educated non-hunter. Anyone that I have tried to have this discussion with thinks the disney movie "Bambi" is a true description of hunting. There are non ethical hunters. They give a bad name to the rest of us. But the benefits to hunting and fishing are endless. Just to mention a few: herd management, habitat protection, economics of a multi billion dollar industry, ethics respect honor handed down for generations, and on and on. Oh and by the way...yes people do eat Bear meat. In fact it's really good!

Rugger says:
No we shouldn't stop hunting!
Anyone who eats meat cannot make a logical argument against hunting.
While those who don't eat meat have a little bit more room to judge, their arguments are no more convincing. Eating other animals is a part of nature. It is something our species has been doing for thousands of years and it is a valuable part of our diet. I don't see anyone complaining about lions eating other animals...

Margo_Arrowsmith says:
Where does it say that they are eating it? Bears are omnivores and I don't know of any meat eating animal whose meat is eaten by humans or dogs, for that matter.
I put this here to answer the question below, but I think this is disgusting.

Peter says:
Where in this article did they say they were not keeping the meat to eat? It's a serious crime to waste the meat from a taken animal. Hunters use guns, bows, sticks, etc to aid us in hunting. Humans have the brains and thumbs to develop these tools. Animals have their sense of smell, sight, hearing, speed etc. to aid them; they are not poor defenseless creatures.

better to go out and get your own meat than mass slaughter cows! that is a beautiful animal and its also very tasty! all carnivors hunt and kill, we are ominvors so we hunt and kill.

There are better ways of wildlife management. For instance:
stef says:
those who hunt are very bad. God is the only one who say's when we can live this world no just people who does just for fun or money. that is so wrong. I hope someone can give this an end.

Live in Alaska and then make judgements like this. I hate hunting, but I think this is a little biased to be comparing this to Sarah Palin. What does she really have to do with any of it? Many Alaska natives have to eat. They are subsistence hunters. All you people from the Lower 48 come up here and shoot them for sport, but we require strict lottery and licensing requirements for you to shoot either a bear or moose. You make it sound like it is open season or some crap. Live here. Spend a lot of time here. Then judge. Otherwise, shut up about Alaska.

I'm against hunting for sport. Really why is it called sport hunting. The hunter has a gun, how much sport can it be. The bigger the gun the bigger the ego, that's what it's about, bragging rights.

Hunting for sport is never OK. How can anyone enjoy ending a beautiful animal's life "for sport"?

California_Dreamin says:
I don't hunt personally, but I don't oppose hunting on princple--actually I think the mass breeding and slaughtering of animals for food is much crueler. At the time, I not going to give up buying chicken, pork and beef at the supermarket so it would be hypocritical of me to condemn hunters for killing animals for their meat.
But this is a black and white issue, there is no middle ground here. If you kill an animal you should at least have enough respect for it to butcher and eat it. This kind of thing is just butchery.

I do not believe in sport hunting or sport fishing! Did know one teach you not to play with your food! I am an Athabascan indian from Alaska, I have always been taught to only kill what you are going to eat and not to play with ones food! I do not play catch and release fishing or just hunting so I can have a hide or head on the wall! It is forbidden!

Killing for entertainment purposes alone can not possibly be considered 'right' by anyone in their right mind. Seriously, who wakes up in the morning and thinks "Ah what a beautiful day...think I'll go kill something"??? Crazy.

Population management and eating I can see.
However, killing just for the joy of seeing a living creature die and knowing that you did it, while having no use for the remains? Not so much

Killing grizzlies: Fair chase in Alaska?
Every day in October trophy hunters in Alaska are killing bears that have learned to trust humans. The bears are visited by photographers and tourists- until October 1st. Then the hunters come. And it's all on Federal Land. Is "Fair Chase" dead in Alaska. This video was posted in October 2007. We welcome and appreciate all comments, but we delete those comments with obscenities.

- Palin not only supports the killing of bears but also the mass killing of wolves. This are the very symbols that fuel the tourist industry in her state. There will be no getting them back once they are gone.

- Richard, I am not sure why you lost your civility, but I don't think that the wolves shot from helicopters were on any humans land.
Chef, thanks for this.
BTW do you even know how to make a lens that is less than 6* and they only let us give 5?

- Easy for you enviro-clowns to criticize. Let's see, what would your solution be to packs of 100-150 pound timberwolves roaming about your neighborhood and farms? Hand-feed them and coo friendly thoughts? Try that sometimes. Wolves are extremely elusive but still dangerous in packs or individually. Hunting from aircraft is wildlife management of extremely dangerous animals. Let's put you in a valley with ONE timberwolf and you'll be armed. Any takers?

This seems to be so interesting! This would give a great knowledge for me about this thing.
Bears really have great skins that may use for many things.
Great post!

- Sarah Palin is my least favorite person of all time. The pic of her sitting on the bear hide is grotesque.
Her latest irresponsible statement about the Death Panel concerning the Obama health initiative is ridiculous. Obama's Health Plan barely has any reform in it at all.
I loved it when Steven Hawking, the brilliant (wheelchair bound) physicist stepped in and said the NHS in the UK saved his life and he'd never trade that system for the deplorable system we have here. Take THAT Sarah Palin!!
Thanks Chef Keem for the angel blessing on my newly updated Ammon Hennacy lens. Ammon was a delightful human being. Apparently he had an FBI file that was pages and pages long. My mom loved Ammon, and in retrospect, my dad could have been jealous, but he loved Ammon, too.
I guess my parents were in that FBI file, too!!
Thanks again!!

- I, for one, hope that Sarah Palin runs for President in 2012. Not because I hope she wins, but for the sheer comedic factor. Was there anything more priceless than hearing what she had to say before the '08 election? Imagine the comedy gold that is just waiting inside that little noggin? Great work by the way.

- What a shame, to take one of the last wild and beautiful places and destroy it. It is going to end up looking like any other awful city so many people fly up to Alaska to escape. We should respect the land and creatures that occupy it. To hunt animals for food is one thing, but for some rich man with self-worth issues to go up to Alaska and kill a wolf or bear from an airplane so he can convince himself he is a man is sickening. Where is the sport, the challenge, the respect? We could learn alot from the Natives we stole the land from. Look at Buffalo, huge populations lived in synchrony with the animals, hunting them for food, clothing, tools, et. They did it with respect, and both species flourished. We managed to nearly wipe every Buffalo out because someone thought it was fun to shoot them from a train. I do not support Palin, and I would have voted for Mccain if it wasnt for her. If someone is suing Bush over environmental policies, what does that tell you.

- Please Check Out Ursa Freedom Project
The Ursa Freedom Project commits to liberate 9,000 bears from bile farms in China/Viet Nam and to end a practice that is commercially unnecessary. We who gather for the sake of the Moon Bear affirm liberty and deplore the torture of any living being. This endangered species is subjected to the unconscionable practice of bile extraction for use by industries which can use higher quality synthetic replacements to bear bile. The products are largely non-essential, including wine, furniture polish and certain types of medicine for preventable diseases. And the Chinese government has turned a deaf ear to the pleas of those who have worked for decades to help these animals.
Return to Freedom
The Ursa Freedom Project commits to liberate farmed Moon Bears from the wretched crush cages and abject torture they experience daily - until they die. The abominable practice of bear bile farming should have never begun and must stop now. These beautiful creatures must be returned to freedom, to live in the state Nature intended for them - a life of up to 30 years to roam in their natural habitat and to eat mostly berries and foliage.
This is no small task, it will take the belief and coming together of a great many to support those who work toward the liberation of farmed bears, to their rehabilitation and release into the wild. The Ursa Freedom Project invites you to join with your loved ones, neighbors and local organisations to share in a unique and uplifting campaign.
We aim to dismantle the bile farm industry. Please explore our website to learn how many small steps can bring these bears to freedom. We thank you for joining us.
Together, we can make a world of change.
