One of the most common problems pet owners have is a bearded dragon not eating. This can be very worrisome because unlike other pets you might be able to diagnose a bit easier, it's more difficult with a Bearded Dragon. And if a living thing doesn't eat, then that means they could succumb to an early death.

Some bearded dragons won't eat much - some not at all. If this is happening to you, you need to get help right away. Some people mistakenly buy a bearded dragon thinking it'll be a whole lot easier to care for than another kind of pet, like a dog you have to take out or a cat you have to make sure doesn't scratch up your furniture.

If your bearded dragon isn't eating, you have to get to the root cause. Remember - you took an animal designed to live in the desert and put him in a different environment, so we need to make sure everything's okay health-wise and that he has the right kind of food for his body.

Bearded DragonThe owner of a baby beardie (a bearded dragons are often called) will need to be even more vigilant about whether their pet is getting the nourishment they need. A baby (or child) bearded dragon should eat tiny crickets about 2-3 times a day. You'll need to see how many your baby bearded dragon eats in up to 10 minute timeframes - kind of like you do with a pet fish.

If your baby bearded dragon not eating is a problem, stop providing the crickets in such large amounts and look for what's causing it. The number should be in about the 20-50 cricket range, per day. If your baby bearded dragon isn't eating nearly enough (or not at all), it may be having trouble. A good rule of thumb is that the food should be no bigger than the space between its eyes - in other words, tiny!

Baby bearded dragons also like to eat plants, so give it fresh greens to gnaw on, too. Many expert recommend that you spray it with water so that the baby beardie stays hydrated.

Crickets Are Not the Only Food for Bearded Dragons

Bearded DragonBearded Dragons like a variety of foods. The adult bearded dragons, like the baby beardies, like to eat plants and animals, wet and dry food. So you need to mix it up. All of the bearded dragons will want some green vegetables, so make sure you provide that.

Unlike a baby bearded dragon, adults only eat once a day. If you're worried that your bearded dragon not eating crickets will kill it, don't worry - there are many alternatives to try. You can feed them other prey, including:

Earthworms (or many other worms you can buy)
Cockroaches
Locusts

Just make sure you buy them and don't grab some from your local environment because there's a risk it poses to your pet. Crickets are the best option, but if your bearded dragon won't eat live prey, make sure you get some specially formulated bearded dragon food pellets and wet food too.
