What is High Blood Pressure and Why is it Dangerous?
High blood pressure is the main risk factor for strokes and a major risk factor for kidney disease, heart attacks and heart failure.
Blood pressure is the amount of pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries as the blood moves through them. It is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Both the systolic and diastolic pressures are measured, and these figures are usually represented with the systolic pressure first, followed by the diastolic pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) is usually defined as having a sustained blood pressure of 140/90mmHg or above.
High blood pressure is dangerous becuase it makes the heart work too hard, that in turn can harden the walls of the arteries. The higher your blood pressure the higher the risk for stroke, heart attacks and heart and kidney failure. Hypertension is also related to dementia and sexual problems. These problems can be prevented if high blood pressure is treated and controlled.
High blood pressure is often known as the silent killer - many people have high blood pressure but don't know because it often has no symptoms until it's too late.

Can Changing Your Outlook On Life Lower Your Blood Pressure?
How To Lower Blood Pressure
Excessive stress, anxiety and unresolved anger can all have a dramatic effect on your health. These emotions trigger the protective fight or flight response, flooding our systems with adrenaline and cortisol that increase blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen consumption and blood flow to the muscles. In short doses these changes make us focused and capable of facing challenges, but in the long term they are detrimental to health.Research shows that people who experience more depression or anxiety in their lives are more likely to be hypertensive.
Having a positive outlook can affect your blood pressure. A study among older Mexican Americans has found an association between high positive emotion and lower blood pressure, suggesting that positive emotion may protect against cardiovascular-related diseases. Results showed that the higher the positive emotions scored, the lower were the systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.
Blood Pressure Fact
High blood pressure usually has no symptoms - some people only learn they have hypertension after the damage is done
Slow Breathing to Lower Blood Pressure
Slow Breathing For Healthy Blood Pressure
Slow deep breathing has long been thought to lower blood pressure and now medical research has proved the connection. The trick is to slow your breathing to under ten breaths per minute, making the exhalation longer than the inhalation.Make yourself comfortable then take a deep breath in through your nose, this increases levels of nitrous oxide in the body which tells the blood vessels to relax. Imagine that you are breathing in through a balloon, with the widest part of the balloon resting in your stomach. Imagine that you are inflating the balloon, gradually bringing the air up into your upper chest. If you can see your stomach moving you are doing it right!
Breathe in for the count of four, then slowly breathe out through your nose to the count of 6, imagining the balloon deflating.
It really is as easy as that!

- I have heard of several people succeeding with the slow breathing technique. An excellent supplement is omega 3. One exercise that helps to momentarily lower it is rotating the ankles, and also waist rotations. Staying away from sodium is a must, specially for those taking pills. Otherwise the dosage will continue to increase. And if you can regain your health through natural means, you should still stay away from sodium if you do not want a relapse.
Good luck to everyone fighting this disease.
Great lens, thanks for your work.

- I have tried to do it naturally, but my BP went up to a degree that I became frightened so I went back on my medication. I may try it again someday - after I lose more weight.

- Really good information about 'the silent killer' well done. I'm on medication to reduce my BP, though over the years I've gone through lots of different types of tablets prescribed by my GP. I like the food list too.
