Climbing a Mountain - with Attitude
I am going to be getting a radioactive injection for the next treatment -don't even know the name of it yet - hope this works. But - I am being more proactive with my food intake and following Dr. Jane Plant's food plan. No dairy, cut out preservatives, lots of organic, fresh veggies, and fruit. Now that is a tall order for the daughter of a dairy farmer. My journey continues so I can't give any results. Along with this I am keeping up my belief that Attitude is the most important thing followed closely by humor. Satelite TV with old situation comedies and movies is great. Smile Life is too Short to Frown
Nearing the end of August and the blood counts should be recovering from the Quadrement injection. Another week and I get more tests to see if we now have it all under control - then maybe the energy will start coming back.
September here and gone. October 1. The Quadrement did a job on what was there but tests show more spots and some in the head. I've just finished 2 weeks of radiation to the brain and so we wait to check that out. After the two weeks I got all the details of this tiny little pill they were giving me - a steroid- to keep swelling down on the brain during radiation. I have been ravenous since I have taken it but never put that together - believe me cancer has not diminished my appetite in any way at any time (except for the indigestion with tomato sauce but that always goes away). This little pill not only gives you some swallowing problems which I did comprehend but you just go back to chewing better - you know like in grade school when they told you to chew each bite 20 or 30 times. I have had a bad case of bronchitis for this past week and a half which just added to it. I would go to the kitchen, eat everything in sight and head back to the bed. The antibotics are finally doing in the bronchitis and they are gradually taking me off the other little pill - a whole month to gradually come off it!
A week since the last radiation treatment and the broncitis is on the way out! I feel human again. I'm really concentrating on my diet as to starving the cancer cells and will be starting another round of chemo in a bout a month and a half. If you haven't checked out my lens on "Your Life in Your Hands" you might do that to see the meal plan/program.
What are your chances of being a caregiver of a cancer patient?
Before it happens - how will you deal?
The caregivers (those who assist, live with the cancer patient) are very much affected by the disease. Much of it is emotional but it is real.

(Remember, I said keep the brain busy and keep active.)
Why can this save lives? Because in this fast paced world we need to relax. We need to sit back, slow down and enjoy what is around us. For many of us that can be with hobbies or crafts. It doesn't have to be sitting in front of a TV or computer screen. Encourage children to get up and try new things, collect interesting objects, paint pictures. They can do so much more than watching that big screen.
When I started cancer treatment at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care, one part is to meet with a Mind/Body Connections Counselor. One of her questions was "What hobbies, activities do you have to help in your healing?" They know that if we have creative projects we can do it will help the mind to deal with the treatments. Many crafts and arts don't take lots of physical energy but do keep the mind active. Keeping the mind active will be comforting and not let you dwell on your health. At the Cancer Center there are jigsaw puzzles set up in about every room - for patients and their families to keep busy during treatment or while waiting. In the infusion room (where you may spend hours a day getting chemotherapy) they have art supplies, colored pencils, optical illusion diagrams to color, as well as a couple jigsaw puzzles. Many women bring their own knitting or crotcheting.
Building wooden projects, whittling, carving, refinishing furniture, or gardening can all be creative activities that let us relax and recoup from the stress of a hard day at work or dealing with problem people at home. The wide range of creative activities gives us so much opportunity to deal with situations that are beyond our control. Creativity can be a short vacation for us in our everyday lives.

Training Boosts Cancer Patients' Quality of Life
(oh boy - another reason to exercise,) eBay Grandma comment
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Physical training should be included in rehabilitation programs for cancer patients, Dutch researchers say. After being treated for cancer, people showed significant improvements in physical function and vitality for up to three months after completing a 12-week training program. They also felt healthier, Dr. Bart van den Borne of Maastricht University and colleagues found.
Adding cognitive behavioral therapy to the mix didn't result in additional improvements, van den Borne and his team report in the medical journal Psychosomatic Medicine, but they say it's too early to conclude that this type of counseling has no value for patients.
More and more people are surviving cancer, the researchers note, but as many as 30 percent say their quality of life has been reduced and that they could use help with both physical and psychosocial issues.
To investigate what type of rehab program might be most effective, van den Borne and his colleagues randomly assigned 209 patients who had completed cancer treatment to a physical training program, or to physical training plus a weekly cognitive behavioral training session, or to a waiting list.
The physical training program included aerobic exercise, strength training, and group sports and games, while the cognitive behavioral therapy was offered in a group format.
Compared to people on the waiting list, those in the physical training group and the training-plus-therapy group showed similar and substantial improvements in their limitations due to physical problems, their physical function, their vitality, and their subjective sense of health. These improvements continued for up to three months after the programs ended.
The physical training program wasn't just exercise, the researchers note, but included group activities that gave participants a chance to gain social support, and used a self-management approach intended to help them feel better able to cope with physical challenges.
Few patients dropped out of the study, and attendance was high, van den Borne and his team point out. "This indicates that participants who on average reported a low quality of life at baseline were highly motivated and that both rehabilitation programs were highly feasible in these cancer survivors," they conclude.
