Beatles or Beach Boys? Who's first album was best?
Ranked #2,039 in Music, #55,328 overall
Who was best in 1963- the Beatles or the Beach Boys?
Its Friday 22 March , 1963. I've just turned 14 and I'm in love with the Beatles. I'm living in Lancashire, in the North of England, about 30 miles from Liverpool. For the last few months all my friends have been crazy about a new group from Liverpool, who look and sound like nothing we've ever heard before- the Beatles! We bought the Beatles first single record, "Love me do". We went mad for the Beatles second single. "Please Please me" and now the Beatles first album has just been released!
Everybody wanted the Beatles first album! I wanted the Beatles first album on the first day of its release! I was crazy for the Beatles!
Did you own Introducing the Beatles?
All new discs were released on a Friday, and this was the most exciting Friday of my young life. I'd saved up all my money and bought my first "LP" as we called them ( short for Long Playing records). The Beatles first album "Please Please Me" burst into the staid old world of the early 1960s and nothing was ever the same again. The Beatles changed our lives.
On that same day, my aunt, uncle and cousins arrived from Minneapolis to visit us. They brought me a gift- an Album called "Surfin Safari" by a group I'd not heard of- the Beach Boys. There were the Beach Boys on the cover, on a beach with a strange truck and carrying something that was, apparently a surfboard! I'd never seen anything like it before! It was the Beach Boys first album.

My family took The Beatles first album, Please Please me back to the U.S.A, months before the it was released there in January 1964. They were trailblazers! Trendsetters! No one in the USA had this Beatles album, which had not been released.
I was the proud owner of the original U.S. Beach Boys first album a month before it was released in the UK in April 1963.People in the UK had not yet heard of the Beach Boys.
So- I owned the Beatles first album, and the Beach Boys first album! A great teenage event!

The Fab Four were everywhere! Magazines and newspapers couldn't get enough of them.
In the UK the album had 14 tracks, which were recorded in one 14 hour session. It was produced by George Martin in the Abbey Road studios- the start of a hugely successful collaboration.
Tracks on the Beatles first album-
On the original UK album, 7 tracks on side 1 were; I saw her standing there, Misery, Anna, Chains, Boys, Ask me why, Please please me
On side 2 were; Love me do, PS I love you, Baby its you, Do you want to know a secret,Taste of honey, Twist and shout.
8 of the songs were written by members of the group. It was pretty unusual then for groups to write, play and sing all their own work.
Love me do , their first single, reached #17 in the UK charts. Please Please me, reached #2 in the UK charts single. It still sounds good today.
The album went to #1 in the UK charts, selling 250,000 in the first 6 months and going on to sell millions worldwide. It stayed at #1 in the UK for29 weeks, only being knocked off the top spot by the Beatles second album.
The US. version, which had 12 tracks, also beacme #1 in the Billboard chart in 1964.
It is being re released on 09/09/09.
The Beatles Please Please me- songs from the great first album
Can't remember what it sounds like?
Who is your favorite Beatle?
Such an important question in the 1960s!
When I was at high school this was a hot discussion topic.
Ringo would always bottom of the list ( bless him!), and it was usually a battle between John and Paul, with George being everyone's second favorite.
Mine was Paul- and I was very proud that my brother had the same birthday ( 18 June) It made me feel that little bit closer to my hero!

Who were the greatest? The Beatles or the Beach Boys
Did the Beatles or the Beach Boys stand the test of time better?
Two great bands from the 60s. The music of both of them is still heard all the time.
Which lasted best? Beatles or Beach Boys?
Whose music has lasted best? The Beatles or the Beach Boys?

The Beatles- I still love their music!
Hope says:
They're both staples in my library - but Beatles are best!
MyKitchen says:
Hard to say, I think the Beatles
Alfiesgirl says:
Need you ask! the beatles were the greatest band EVER !
Gail47 says:
What a tough choice - they were both great bands. Wow! Wavering! Personal impact was the Beach Boys, but world impact goes to the Beatles. So, my choice for this poll is, reluctantly, the Beatles.
_Joan_ says:
The music of the Beatles has had a greater impact on me, but I'm a big fan of the Beach Boys as well. I think the Beach Boys ended up lasting much longer than the industry might have "expected" them to. They could have easily been a one-or-two-album novelty act, but instead they made an important mark on the pop music world due to the talent of Brian Wilson.
The Beach Boys- I'm tired of the Beatles, if I want to sing along to great old songs it must be the Beach Boys.
craftycrow says:
I was 16 and I liked the Beach Boys better than the Beatles. I have Beach Boys songs for my cell phone ring tones... Barbara Ann and I Get Around. I love the Beach Boys. I went to see them a few years ago here in Connecticut. Only 1 of the boys was in the original band, though. It was still nice. Take care, Linda
LikinTrikin says:
I must admit that I'm "Beach Boys" all the way!! I think Brian Wilson was the greatest composer of all time.
ohcaroline says:
I'm a Beach Boys girl from a long way back. Their music still revs me up.
1963 The Beach Boys first album is a slow burner
Surfin Safari, The Beach Boys first album
And what was a 409? A CAR! A song about a car, with lots of car noises!
It was just so American, so cool! So Californian! I grew to love it - and still love the Beach Boys today.
Released in the U.S.A. in November 62, it spent 37 weeks in the Billboard charts and peaked at #32.
In the UK it was released in April 1963 and did not make the charts.
Brian Wilson, Denis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine- the original Beach Boys.
The cover photo was shot in Paradise Cove Malibu, and the tracks are
Side 1;Surfin Safari, County Fair,10 Little Indians, Chug a lug,Little Girl, 409
Side 2; Surfin,Heads you win, Summertime Blues, Cuckoo Clock, Moon Dawg, The Shift.
