Beatles Lyrics

As producer George Martin said recently: "I wouldn't have believed at the time that 40 years later I'd still be talking about the phenomenon of The Beatles."

The Beatles are the greatest pop stars of the 20th century, if we measured it on purely commercial and popularity success. Their impact will probably remain unsurpassed if we realize what changes they brought in the music industry (recording techniques, marketing and songwriting). They simply changed the face of popular music. It is as well to remember that they have been 17 times No. 1.

John Lennon

John Lennon's assertive rhythm guitar.

Born: October 9, 1940, Liverpool, England
Died: December 8, 1980, New York, United States of America

John Lennon: With his tortured psyche John was the most enigmatic band leader ever known. Thanks to him, the band expanded their horizons - until they splitted.

Those two quotes out of many, many more, tells us a lot about the late John Lennon: "My role in society, or any artist's or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell the people how to feel. Not as a preacher, note as a leader, but as a reflection of us all", and "You don't need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are".

John Lennon was shot in front of his apartment complex in New York. He was in the process of releasing another album"Milk and Honey". John died of the age of 40 in the Roosevelt Hospital on December 8, 1980 (he received multiple gun shot in the back).

John Lennon created the Beatles and with Paul, Ringo and George, they made great music together. John was a leader and always fought for peoples right. He cared for other people. He was a great music writer and an excellent pop artist. He will never ever be replaced by anybody.

John Lennon - Books about his Life

John

This isn't Cynthia Lennon's first book about her legendary ex-husband. A Twist of Lennon--a slim volume that John tried to suppress on grounds of libel--came out in 1978. But now, 25 years after his death, she finally feels ready to tell the "full and truthful story" of their life together. Why? In his foreword, son Julian writes of their being "dismissed or at best treated as insignificant bit players" in the story of John's life; it's Cynthia's goal, with John, to set the record straight. She does make a case for being more than just "the impressionable young girl who fell for him, then trapped him into marriage," and it's moving to read, in his own words, of John's love for his son. And while there's nothing new in her account of the Fab Four's rise to fame, as the greatest success story of the rock era, it's a legend that bears retelling. But most salient of all are Cynthia's sketches of pain, regret, and intimidation. John was indeed a brilliant, loving man, but he was also "passionately jealous," "verbally cutting," sometimes abusive, and often neglectful. (It is hinted that his behavior may have paralleled that of the woman who raised him, his Aunt Mimi.) Unfortunately, Cynthia's "response to John's provocative and cruel behavior was to stick by him more solidly than ever...[feeling] that if he could trust me and believe that I loved him he might soften."

It's not this dysfunction, however, but rather John's use of LSD, on which she blames the emotional "chasm" that led to the failure of their marriage. And though the Lennons' divorce comes relatively late in the book, the pages that follow are by far the saddest, as they chronicle John's increasing distance from and neglect of his former family--especially Julian, who would only see his father three times after he moved to New York in 1971. It's no surprise that Cynthia lays much of the blame for this at the feet of Yoko Ono, who is described as controlling and insensitive, especially in the wake of John's murder. But even though there's a lot of bitterness and resentment in these pages, it's not overwhelming, being offset by Cynthia's fierce love for her son and her continuing affection for her ex-husband. A full picture of John Lennon's life will never exist as long as Ono judges herself unable to write about their time together, but John goes a long way toward improving the situation. --Benjamin Lukoff

In His Own Write

John Lennon's own pen: I was bored on the 9th of Octover 1940 when, I believe, the Nasties were still booming us led by Madolf Heatlump (who only had one). Anyway they didn't get me. I attended to varicous schools in Liddypol. And still didn't pass -- much to my Aunties supplies. As a member of the most publified Beatles my (P, G, and R's) records might seem funnier to some of you than this book, but as far as I'm conceived this correction of short writty is the most wonderfoul larf I've every ready.

All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono

John Lennon could be angry, as he is in Lennon Remembers: The Full Rolling Stone Interviews from 1970, and nasty, as proven by Albert Goldman's brilliant, scathing The Lives of John Lennon.

But he could also be charming, smart, and extraordinarily witty, as he is in his last interview, published in book form as All We Are Saying. Co-interviewee Yoko Ono is charm-free but valuable, because she sparks the conversation and brings up fascinating stuff that Lennon wished she hadn't, like their mad plots to kidnap her daughter from her ex-husband. As interviewer David Sheff's tape rolls, John and Yoko's anecdotes flow effortlessly: the joys of making their 1980 comeback album, Double Fantasy; the mortifying horrors of John's "lost weekend" in L.A. with Harry Nilsson; John's interestingly twisted family life; John and Yoko and Paul's last get-together, watching Saturday Night Live the night producer Lorne Michaels offered the Beatles $3,200 to reunite on the show (they almost got in a cab and did it!).

Best of all is Lennon's song-by-song account of who wrote which famous tunes and where they came from. "Strawberry Fields" contains an entire childhood memoir, and the production reflects Paul's alleged "sabotage" of Lennon's work. "Please Please Me" was based on a Roy Orbison melody and Bing Crosby's punning song title "Please (Lend an Ear to My Pleas)." The "element'ry penguins" in "I Am the Walrus" refer to idiots like Allen Ginsberg who chant "Hare Krishna" worshipfully. "Hey Jude" was Paul's song comforting John's son Julian when John left his family for Yoko, and Paul's unconscious, reluctant farewell to his writing partner ("go out and get her").

Lennon had been publicly silent and artistically dormant for five years before these interviews, and he was just bursting with the exhilaration of the rebirth of his imagination days before his death. Reading this book is like sharing a day in the life of a very happy man. --Tim Appelo

Playboy Interviews with John Lennon & Yoko Ono: The Final Testament

I first read this book back in 1983, to gain a little insight of John...and it quickly became my favourite book. Although I don't think Yoko was or is everything he thought, this was a man who truly loved his wife, and believed with his whole heart and soul in their marriage and life together. He was enjoying making music again, so much (this interview was done in September of 1980) and was looking forward to the future...hoping he'd be there with us. His love for his music, his wife, his sons, and even the Beatles are all there. He gives his opinions on every subject he can think of, both positive and negative, in his usual witty, straight-to-the-point manner that we all know him for. The interviewer did a great job, and was clearly a man who admired John Lennon as much as I do. He did a great job in this book, and it is my absolute favourite, out of all of my collection. Anyone who wants a peek into what John thought and felt and wanted you to know, should read this book...you will treasure it as I do. -- Claudia Brady (U.S.A.)

Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr's slaphappy no-rolls drumming.

Ringo Starr was born on July seventh, 1940.

Ringo Starr: His monotone vocals made "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus's Garden" classics. As the world's most famous drummer he had more up his sleeve:acting and touring with his own band.

What they said about him:
"Ringo is Ringo, that's all there is to it. And he's every bloody bit as warm, unassuming, funny, and kind as he seems. He was quite simply the heart of the Beatles." - John Lennon.

Ringo's just a lad. Everybody always loved him. And now that he's all dried out, he's just a lovable, interesting, intelligent bloke." - Paul McCartney

"Playing without Ringo is like driving a car on three wheels. - George Harrison

Books about Ringo Starr

Postcards from the Boys

Ringo loved to receive mail, especially from his band mates. Didn't matter much what the notes said "everything here is still going well, except we miss you," "doing nothing at all" or "YOU ARE THE GREATEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD" he saved them, and now, 38 years after getting a postcard from Paul from Spain ("not understanding a word but having fun"), he shares them in this intimate, funny and moving collection. The fronts of the cards are displayed on left-hand pages-there are Copenhagen rooftops, topless Zulu women, topless Australian scuba divers, Prince Charles, the Statue of Liberty, topless Hawaiian ukulele players-while the backs appear on right-hand pages. The notes allow readers into an insider club of sorts, shedding light on the good, the bad and making music, and Ringo offers commentary below each one. For example, after a note from John and Yoko saying, "Who'd have thought it would come to this...." Ringo recalls, "This was a hell time because it was the family break-up." Another card, from Paul, reads, "YOU GOT THAT SOMETHING." Asks Ringo, "What was happening in my life here? Do you know?" Perhaps what these missives best illuminate is the deep friendship that existed among "the boys," despite all that was going on with the Beatles and in the world, proving, perhaps, that all you need is love. -Publishers Weekly

The Ringo Starr Encyclopedia

I bought this hoping there would be some text/narration of Ringo's life, esp. before the Beatles. It is truly an encyclopedia and as such is more of a reference book than something to read.I suppose that the movie "That'll be the Day" in which Ringo essentially plays himself during the period of his life pre-Beatles working at a Butlin's-like holiday camp is the closest we can come to getting a glimpse into the "real" Ringo. Ringo was a greaser-rocker (Like the rest of the beatles) and the movie is almost a mini-bio (it's either "that'll be the day" or "stardust" in which Ringo appears;both available on AMazon or Ebay.)
There is a dearth of material on Ringo, which is really unfair as George Martin has observed on the Beatles Cirque du Soliel "Love" CD/show how Ringo's awesome drumming,(which Phil Collins has said is impossible for another drummer to reproduce eg. "the fills on "A Day in the Life");is the glue that kept the Beatles' sound consistent over the years.
Ringo is the foundation without which The Beatles would not've been as successful. Most pop music fans don't pay much attention to drumming and might not realize how unique and great Ringo was w/ the Beatles.
I hope someday that a good author/researcher comes along and puts out a biography worthy of Ringo Starr. It would be totally WRONG if that never happens, esp. while Ringo's still with us. The Ringo encyclopedia probably deserves 2 0r 3 starrs, but I gave it 4 out of respect for Ringo himself, also for the lack of material on Ringo and because only Charlie Watts can come close to Ringo in the sense of being so closely woven into the overall sound of their respective groups,(ok,maybe Ginger Baker, too.)(Watts and Starr are criminally underrated.)Like a good referee or umpire,a good drummer is doing his job well when nobody notices him. -- Dennis York (Vancouver,WA)

Ringo Starr: A Life

Replacing Pete Best on drums just as The Beatles were set to record Love Me Do, Ringo Starr became not only the luckiest man in pop music, but also the epitome of the rock and roll lifestyle: fame, fortune, glamorous women, plum film roles, and one-name recognition. After the group's 1970 breakup, only the genial, even-tempered Ringo remained on good terms with all of his feuding ex-mates. But behind the sunglasses and the quips lay another story: a hardscrabble childhood in Liverpool, frequent bouts of poor health, lack of education, and a long battle with alcoholism. Alan Clayson's biography traces Starr's entire life and career, from his early days with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes through the tumultuous Fab Four years and to his wildly successful stint as an actor and solo artist. This biography remains the definitive account of the man who anchored the Mersey Sound.

George Harrison

George Harrison's rockabilly-style guitar leads.

Born: February 24, 1943 in Liverpool, England
Died: November 29, 2001 of cancer in Los Angeles, United States. He was aged 58.

George Harrison was a popular British songwriter and musician, best known as a member of The Beatles and as "the quiet Beatle too". George Harrison grew from a shy kid into an expressive songwriter facinated with life and the pursuit of cosmic balance.

His former band-mate Sir Paul McCartney said: "I am devastated and very very sad. We knew he'd been ill for a long time. "He was a lovely guy and a very brave man and had a wonderful sense of humour. He is really just my baby brother."

Fellow Beatle Ringo Starr paid tribute to Harrison, telling the UK Press Association: "We will miss George for his sense of love, his sense of music and his sense of laughter."

Lennon's widow Yoko Ono paid tribute to Harrison, who she said brought magic to the lives of those who knew him."George has given so much to us in his lifetime and continues to do so even after his passing, with his music, his wit and his wisdom." "His life was magical and we all felt we had shared a little bit of it by knowing him. "Thank-you George, it was grand knowing you".

George Harrison Books

I, Me, Mine

A 400-page memoir from the Quiet Beatle? Can it be? Well, yes and no: only about 60 pages of this earnest tome, originally published in 1980, are devoted to Harrison's recollections of life before, during and (notably) after the Beatles. His memories, which manage to feel fresh and distant at the same time, come to readers via transcripts of his conversations with Derek Taylor (1932-1997), the Beatles press officer and ghostwriter of Brian Epstein's memoir. Harrison (1943-2001) was only in his late 30s when I Me Mine came out-the Beatles had formed, changed music forever and disbanded before his 28th birthday. The rest of this volume consists of photos with whimsical captions ("the author enjoying a cheese sandwich with some friends" is assigned to a picture of Harrison with a sitar) and facsimiles of his handwritten lyrics (including a fairly different version of "Taxman"), each accompanied by a brief explanation (ideas expressed in "It's All Too Much," for example, were inspired by LSD and "confirmed in meditation"). Most of the songs were composed after Harrison's immersion in Hinduism; divorced from their melodies, lyrics espousing love, peace and harmony tend to take on a certain sameness. This volume offers much to Beatles zealots, but for the casual fan, Harrison will likely remain as admirable and as inscrutable as ever. B&w photos and illustrations throughout.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps : The Music of George Harrison

For all Beatle fans, this blend of bio and song review assesses his immense contribution to music. The most comprehensive evaluation of George Harrison's musical career ever published. Treating all of Harrison's songs individually, author Simon Leng investigates the background to their creation, and finds not just pop and rock, but big band, gospel, and Indian and Polynesian influences. The biographical content is enhanced with insights from many key figures who worked closely with Harrison. First-hand accounts from them of the Concert for Bangla Desh and the making of All Things Must Pass take the reader into the studio and concert halls with Harrison. Not simply concentrating on Harrison's solo career, Leng also clearly defines Harrison's role in the Beatles and illustrates how Harrison's guitar arrangements were fundamental to the Beatles' sound and success. What emerges from While My Guitar Gently Weepsis a stirring portrait of a great artist whose music and spiritual quest quite literally influenced millions around the globe.

Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison

What makes this book wonderful and distinct is that it explores the influences that helped George Harrison develop, share and explore his spirituality. In fact, it is this very sharing on George Harrison's part that makes his music so distinct.

I like the way this author hones in on why George's spiritual hunger was not satisfied by material success while living in the Material World. George's spiritual Long & Winding Road took him through Hindu teachings as well as the Hare Krishna devotees. At no time did George commit himself to any one faith or expression of faith; as stated in his own song, "if you don't know where you're going, any road'll take you there."

It has been well documented that the former Beatle was at home with Hindu teachings and philosophy; yoga; mediatation and the traditions of each. Even so, he kept his mind open to new and different ideas and possibilities. Greene does an excellent job of exploring and examining this aspect of the man's life. Greene also does an excellent job of explaining what rituals George practiced and his rationale for the forms these expressions took. This is very interesting. -- BeatleBangs1964 (United States)

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band

Decades later it's a little hard to appreciate just how shocking Plastic Ono Band was at the time of its release. Yes, John Lennon's first post-Beatles solo album is still a must-own for any rock fan, but decades of punk, metal, and grunge have desensitized our ears somewhat to the naked howls of despair that fill tracks like "Mother," "Isolation," and "I Found Out." In addition, "I don't believe in Beatles," the climactic line of "God," doesn't have nearly the resonance as it did around the time of the Fab Four's breakup, when such a sentiment practically bordered on heresy. And yet it's a testament to the high quality of Lennon's songs that Plastic Ono Band continues to be an incredibly moving listening experience. --Dan Epstein
