Their heaviest work PAVED THE WAY for hard rock and metal, with songs like Helter skelter and I want you (she's so heavy). The Stones can't outbeat them in that respect either, let alone match the progressiveness of a song like Tomorrow never knows, one of the cornerstones of acid rock and house. The Beatles may have been moulded into a clean cut hit making machine their early years, but remember people, that was all marketing. From '65 on, they truely revolutionized popular music. By the way, the prefame Beales rocked the house in Hamburg and Liverpool as well - straight rock n roll. Originally, the Stones were middle class boys, whereas the Beatles were coming from a tougher working class environment. I like the Stones too, but i always feel that Mick can't stand becoming second.

Let's face it, The Rolling Stones have been around for about 50 years and The Beatles will forever be considered the greatest rock and roll band. I don't care if people think the Beatles weren't rock. If you read about them, you will know that their roots were rock. They just cleaned up their image, with the help of Brian Epstein, to make the public accept them more. The Rolling Stones seemed like a bit of a rip off sometimes.
Examples:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - 1967 vs. "Their Satanic Majesties Request" - 1967
Let It Be - 1969 vs. Let It Bleed - 1969
"All you need is love" vs. "We Love You"
But, that's just my opinion.

I prefer The Rolling Stones because I have grown more and more fond of their songs over time. The reverse happened for the Beatles. I grew sick of listening to their pop songs. I guess I like rock and roll based on blues more than pop melodies in major scale. The same thing happened with Oasis, I loved their songs at first and listen to it a lot, then got sick of it.

And plus, they were the bad boys(who doesn't love bad boys?), The Beatles seemed too clean cut and happy(even if they weren't), the Rolling Stones where just about breaking the rules and causing excitement. I'm not sure if the Beatles ever gotten banned from playing on television, but everybody knows the Stones did. Mick, Keith, Brian, Bill, and Charlie performed songs that the kids of the 60's wanted to hear: about gettin' no satisfaction, getting off their cloud, fading away and more. They also made their roots of inspiration known...the blues. They named themselves after a blues song, they sang blues songs, and loved the blues. And the Stones have a more heavier sound which defines rock and roll, the Beatles were too smooth. Don't get me wrong, i like the Beatles, but i LOVE the Rolling Stones more. And what did the Beatles do that made them "the number 1 artist of all time"? Besides doing what the Rolling Stones did...making girls scream. Personally i would say LED ZEPPELIN but their not on here, sadly.

For thirty years or so John Wayne led all other actors at the box office yet everybody agreed that he was no more than a mediocre actor, not in the same galaxy as Laurence Olivier or Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro,etc. I could give a million examples in music of songs of pop songs that easily outsold songs that are considered all time greats. Having sold more doesn't mean better than. Eric Olson of MSNBC, Stevie Van Zandt, and Greg Kot of the new book "Beatles vs. Rolling Stones" all said the Beggars Banquet-Exile on Main St. run of 4 albums was the best run in rock history. I'm not saying the Stones are better than the Beatles but they certainly are at least close to them. So is U2 for that matter. One thing the Beatles were better than the Stones were is that they were mostly a positive force in being anti-war, McCartney being pro animal rights and Harrison being a spiritual person. But they're behind U2 in that regard.
