The Beatles

The Beatles were a pop and rock group from Liverpool, England formed in 1960. Primarily consisting of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals) throughout their career, The Beatles are recognised for leading the mid-1960s musical "British Invasion" into the United States. Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll and homegrown skiffle, the group explored genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. Their clothes, styles, and statements made them trend-setters, while their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s. After the band broke up in 1970, all four members embarked upon solo careers.

The Beatles are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music and the best-selling musical group in history.http://uktv.co.uk/history/gallery/aid/601378/multipageid/5823 The Beatles' First Recording In the United Kingdom, The Beatles released more than 40 different singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one, earning more number one albums (15) than any other group in UK chart history.http://www.licensing.biz/brand-profiles/16/The-Beatles The Beatles This commercial success was repeated in many other countries; their record company, EMI, estimated that by 1985 they had sold over one billion records worldwide. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Beatles have sold more albums in the United States than any other band. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles number one on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. According to that same magazine, The Beatles' innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s, and their influence on pop culture is still evident today.

Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are an English band whose music was initially based on rhythm and blues and rock & roll. Formed in London and having their first success in the UK, they subsequently became popular in the US during the "British Invasion" in the early 1960s.

The band formed in 1962 when original leader Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart were joined by singer Mick Jagger as lead vocals and guitarist Keith Richards, whose songwriting partnership later contributed to their taking the leadership role in the group. Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early lineup. Ian Stewart was removed from the official lineup in 1963 but continued to work with the band as road manager and keyboardist until his death in 1985.

The band's early recordings were mainly covers of American blues and R&B songs. Their 1965 single "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" established The Rolling Stones as a premier rock and roll act.[http://wm04.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=33:wbfuxx9sldje "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"]allmusic, accessed 14 December 2007 Starting with their 1966 album Aftermath, the songs of Jagger and Richards, aided by the instrumental experimentation of Jones, expanded an always present stylistic flexibility. Jones died in 1969 shortly after being fired from the band and was replaced by Mick Taylor. Taylor recorded five albums with The Rolling Stones before quitting in 1974. Former Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood stepped in and has been with the band ever since. Wyman left the Rolling Stones in 1993; bassist Darryl Jones, who is not an official band member, has worked with the group since 1994.

The Rolling Stones have released 22 studio albums in the UK (24 in the US), eight concert albums (nine in the US) and numerous compilations; they have had 32 UK & US top-10 singles, 43 UK & US top-10 albums from 1964 and 2008 and have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide."Everything is turning to gold", Record sales of The Rolling Stones. 1971's Sticky Fingers began a string of eight consecutive studio albums at number one in the United States. In 1989 The Rolling Stones were inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2004 they were ranked number 4 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They are also ranked as the number 2 artists of all time on Acclaimedmusic.net. Their latest studio album, A Bigger Bang, was released in 2005 and followed by the highest-grossing tour in history, which lasted into late summer 2007. During the 1969 American tour, tour manager Sam Cutler introduced them as "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World", a title which has remained. Their image of unkempt and surly youth is one that many musicians still emulate.

So, which is it???

serramark71 says:

The Beatles! they contributed everything and not only music!

me says:

the beatles.
they are wayy better than the rolling stones.

Craig Latham says:

The Rolling Stones fucking rule. The Beatles do too..........but not as much as The Stones.

theknitter says:

Has to be the Stones. They didn't let petty differences get between them!

beto says:

the stones are great but sorry not as good as the beatles and less influential, the stones first hit was written by the beatles for the stones, I wanna be your man, the stones attempted to copy Sgt Pepper with a failure, it took the stones 10 extra years to have has many hits as the beatles with the release of start me up in 1980.......and what have any of them done by themselves.....I love the stones but beatles no dobut

hebrews_11 says:

If the Beatles hadn't invaded America, we might not even know who the Rolling Stones are. Decade after decade, almost all of the major artists/musicians state that the Beatles were huge influences.

*aly* says:

the beatles...
of course!
led zepplin is up there too :]

xyz says:

THE BEATLES!!!

mik says:

beatles

DamonAlbarn says:

The Beatles were the first to draw a fan-eruption. They've written oh so many songs, and even Paul's very first song "Inspite of All the Danger" is really good in ratio to his young age. But now all those 60-Heroes are antiquated, I think they can't compare to e.g. Blur, whereas I think that Oasis is just a cheap Beatles-Fake. However, Beatles are better!!!

kiwisoutback says:

The Beatles! They were around for less than ten years and had such a huge impact...while the Stones have had what, 45-50 years? The Stones are great, but no competition for the Beatles!

ThomasClifford says:

Yup...The Beatles, hands down!

Joe Castellanos says:

The greatest doesn't have to be your favorite so one shouldn't take this decision too personally. First of all, I would say if their wouldn't have been the Beatles, the Stones wouldn't have evolved as much, I believe especially in the early days. The Stones had a harder edge, perhaps better "rockers", but in the end "the most people" liked the Beatles when they were both around reflected in number of top 40s, number of #1s. Those are the facts, the pure numbers. I love them both but give a definite edge to the Beatles

paul mccartney says:

the beatles no contest

nathan says:

Rolling Stones shouldn't even be here. Led Zeppelin is obviously the better choice.

hellsyeah says:

the stones are the worst piece of shit band iv ever heard, their just lucky that their producers can fix mick jaggers fucked up voice so it sounds bearable on their records because their live performances arent worth a shit, plus, its pretty bad when a bands lead singer is reffered to as satan in not only one of his own songs, but in one of the greatest songs ever written. the stones had to stay together because they are worthless by themselves, but every one of the beatles had a very successfull solo career after the band split up. and the beatles averaged 3 albums a year when the stones only averaged 1 a year, and the stones had an extra member giving them and advantage and they still dont even compare to the beatles. so the beatles dominate everytime.

jellybabyblue says:

nobody can ever beat the beatles!!!!!! not in a zillion years..

bird says:

beatles always win!!!

the beatles>the stones says:

The Beatles were insanely amazing. They released 230something songs in 7 years. Mick Jagger was a huge admirer of the Beatles. About 80% of Beatles songs are classics. The Stones have been around for over 40 years and still haven't accomplished as much as they did in 7 years. Whether they meant to or not, they revolutionized popular music. The Beatles moved in so many directions that the Stones couldn't keep up. It's funny how right after the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's the Stones released their own Psychedelic album Satanic Majesty's Request which wasn't even close to an eighth as good. Mick Jagger stated that he loved the song Hey Jude and he would like to make a song like it. He did and so You Can't Always Get What You Want was born. Good Song but not as good. Some people are biased to bluesy-rock. Some people like a band with a variety of styles and ideas.
The Beatles raped the Stones songwriting abilities. Even when they were solo they were intense. Paul wrote Band on the Run, Live and Let Die, Jet, Etc. John wrote Imagine, Instant Karma, Jealous Guy. George had classics like My Sweet Lord and Bangla-Desh. Even Ringo had It Don't Come Easy.

No way, Monkeybrain!

Timewarp says:

Come on its gotta be the Rolling Stones for sure, we're talking ROCK band here not POP band and the Stones clearly ROCK WAY HARDER (and way longer!)

James says:

The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band in my opinion. The Beatles are great but even they can not match the Stones. You can't compare Harrison to Richards or Lennon or McCartney to Jagger. The Stones also had Brian Jones, one of the greatest musicians in rock history

Dustin says:

Um....Led zeppelin

Doug says:

Beatles suck compaired to the stones. Why did this person pick the beatles to compair to the stones? It's not right!

Phil says:

Dude they both kick ass but the stones are far better. The best band ever though is Led Zeppelin!!!

yup says:

Gimme shelter best song ever , although stones are the better musicians , beatles were the better writers, still go for the stones

The Stones have everything the Beatles don't says:

The Beatles are just jealous.

Who do we want forever?! Who will we have forever?! says:

Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones Stones.

Stones will Reign Supreme for ever, Beatles will always Stand in the Dark. says:

The Beatles are like the little kid on the street that has a mommy that wont let it play in the mud. The Rolling Stones are the ones who everyone wants to be like. They play better music, get better fans, have better health {no matter what they smoke it seems like}, and certainly inspired more people to play music.The Stones fans are out there making music, the Beatles are simply wishing they could make a good song. Beatles really just needed some Satisfaction. {And for the record the Rolling Stones replied to the Beatles songs, they didn't exactly copy, that is just like saying a comment on your original message is copying, You freakin' melon heads!}

Keith Richards will always be the worlds greatest guitarist in the worlds greatest band. says:

The Beatles brainwashed people with their sucky music, The Stones merely want to bring the earth back to reality. Stones all the way Man! They are so much better, in everyway.

Stones... They are all cool! says:

The Beatles guitar sounds just flat out SUCK! They are flat and have no rhythm. None at all!!! I mean the Stones practically MADE Rock and Roll what it is today!

The Beatles seem like they Really are insects. What is so Lovable about them?! I fail to see why they even HAVE fans. says:

The stones knew what music is about, Fun! The Beatles seem like they have a rod up their butt all the freaking time! Loosey Goosey Baby!

Stones that Roll, Beatles just Croak. says:

"Beatles talk of dreams, while the Stones speak the Truth". Beatles are dreamers... That is all they ever will be! None of their riffs were as great as any from the Stones.

Stones will Triumph! says:

The Rolling Stones have dominated music for over forty Years, the Beatles lasted how long? (They couldn't handle it.)

Stones You Ninny-Heads! says:

Beatles suck, they were only lucky to shove through the door first!

Greatest Rockband will always be no matter what you say says:

The Stones are by far the greatest Rock and Roll band. The Beatles music shouldn't even be played in a world of actually good music. It could never compare to the great songs that come from the band Rolling Stones. "You've got the sun, you've got the moon, and you've got the Rolling Stones." No matter what you do, They will always be there! And most Beatles fans just are Beatles fans because their parents were Beatles fans, most of whom still haven't been introduced to great music.

SallyBear says:

Rolling Stones, hands down! While the Beatles were telling me "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" the Stones were saying "Let's Spend the Night Together!" No contest - Stones got it.

Captain Teague says:

The Stones have survived throughout the ages and continue to produce new and great music. They have changed the music industry forever with classic ORIGINAL songs. There music is nothing like The Beatles, check your facts beatleSeva. Don't get me wrong The Beatles are great but they did not make it this far sure Lennon died but they were long split before that. The Stones not only have continued to produce some of the best music the world.

Tom Kurtz says:

The Beatles are better than the Stones. but Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are much better than both of them.

sex,drugs,androckandroll says:

Don't get me wrong, I always enjoyed listneing to the Beatles, and they are still an influence in rock today, but the Rolling Stones are the better musicians in my opinion. There songs have a certain fire and attitude behind them that really gets the person watching or listening to them excited. for some reason the Beatles don't seem to have that same reaction on people. Whatever it is, the Rolling Stones have that unique spark that gets the listener into what there saying.
