What Is A Beat System?
The beat system is specializing in one area of reporting. The word "beat" means concentrating on a particular area or category.
In the older days, the police force formed "beat groups" around different areas and estates to keep the neighbourhood safe and sound. This system is heavily used by journalist and bloggers.
How The Beat System Works?
The pioneers who are senior journalist, started the beat reporting system where a group of journalist who are specializing in a articular filed will work together and discover new and unveiling stories to cover on the newspaper.
The assignment editor normally do not assign duties to the reporters because when the assignment editor distributes his sources to the senior journalist, the SN will delegate his job to his reporters who are in his beat group to complete the assignment and get back to him before the deadline.
Reporters who are chosen to be in a particular beat group requires wealth of experience,flair, lingustic skills before considered to be fit in a beat group, the beat group leader and group of reporters can't afford a mistake, missing any news related to their beat.
If your beat group happens to miss a story which is covered by other news agency, your company might be losing readership since more sources are found in another news agency so why do people have to buy your newspaper which does not give a comprehensive coverage.
This system have also been introduce in the blogosphere where bloggers start off in a particular niche and generate news from what they have picked off from sources.
